Why am I doing this and why should you hop on this journey!

Shall we break the ice?

Hi there! Welcome and let me introduce you to what I will be talking about here. You must have gotten the idea from the name of the blog and you are right! Yes, it will be about Korea. The reason that I am doing this is, for one, I am an avid fan of their cinema and culture. However, I feel there is still not enough recognition about many things Korean! So, let’s break it down on subtopics that I would be exploring here.

Cinema : Because it’s not all about just Parasite!

Memories of Murder, 2003. Directed by Bong Joon Ho

Memories of murder, a movie that changed my life, literally! I would never have gotten so deep into Korean cinema if not for this movie! I remember when I was around 15 or 16 years old when I first saw this movie, by chance. In those days, the internet was still a ‘luxury’ and so for me, there was no way of knowing that two of the game-changing and probably greatest Korean movies ever, Memories of Murder and Oldboy were released. Quite frankly, I don’t even exactly remember the year that I watched this movie. However, I still clearly remember asking my cousin to put on a movie on his computer for me as I did not want to go to bed. So he did, Memories of murder, and I ended up watching that movie two times that night. I shall talk more in detail about this particular favorite of mine, but for now, it is just the introduction of this blog, just breaking the ice! Also, I will be discussing more Korean movies, my likes, dislikes, what sets them apart, and so forth. Please bear in mind though, I am no film critic or an expert. So it won’t be too heavy on the discussion about camera motions, editing, and that sort of thing. Just an enthusiast and aficionado putting the thoughts and feelings in words. I hope some of my recommended movies would be enjoyed and appreciated by you! Nothing would make me happier to receive recommendations on hidden Korean gems.

Music: Yes, Korean hip-hop and rap exists and you need to listen to it!

Korean artists Beenzino, Paloalto, The Quiett, Deeflow, Changmo, Tiger JK, Nafla, Kid Milli, Dok2 and E Sens.

Since we have made it clear that this blog is going to be about Korean cinema (and of course some TV series as well), let’s jump to what else I will be ranting about! Korean hip-hop/rap music! I got my taste of K hip-hop very very recently. When my Korean friend was visiting me and showed me some of the Korean hip-hop for me to know that it is not all about k-pop there! I will be talking about some of the artists that I have discovered and have been enjoying their work. We will be looking from their beginning to rise to fame and controversies along the way as well! I will be sharing their work that I enjoy as well as about Show me the money and high school rapper TV reality shows. You have to be a true Korean hip hop fan or a Korean to know this, but I will talk about it in later posts of course!

Food, Fashion and literature : Underground to tending

IAB studio, Thisisneverthat, Chef Paik Jong-won, Human acts by Han Kang IISE, Korean delicacies and of course, soju!

Last but not the least, I will dive into Korean culture. I will be talking about some fashion brands from Korea that need more attention (at least from my point of view!). There are many Korean street styles or Korean-based companies that are now collaborating on an international level and you should at least have a look at it if nothing more! Food that you should try or maybe you would want me to try. Also, since I love reading, Korean literature would certainly be a part of this blog. I would like to shout out some of the books and Korean authors that I have come across. If I get some recommendations along the way, that would be appreciated. So this section would be more like Somaek (soju + beer), we will be mixing things here!

Bong Joon Ho at Golden Globes

I would like to make it clear that I still do not speak Korean or can read and write Hangul. However, what has kept me going is that 1-inch tall barrier of subtitles and my passion for South Korea in general. With this blog, what I intend to do is show you a side of South Korea that has been ignored or has not been given its well-deserved limelight yet. Squid game, Parasite, and K-pop have already done their part to put South Korea on the world map, although there lies a hidden treasure and I intend to share it with you all. The focus of these blogs will be cinema, music, and underground culture but we will further touch on literature, food, and some interesting history as well!

With that being said, thank you for being here and for reading my first blog! I do not want to take it as a one-way reading blog. Please feel free to enlighten me as well. After all, I started this so we all gain something. See you soon.
