Whoever Slanders To You About Others, Will Slander About You — And Whoever Reports To You, Will Soon Report About You:

Islam is a system of Justice, love, and compassion which teaches us that we should respect the honor, reputation, and privacy of others.

Lies, suspicion, backbiting, slander, and gossip are destructive, major sins that go against what Islam stands For and sow enmity and discord among Muslims. They cause hostilities between Family members, neighbors, and Friends. Therefore, Islam clearly defines and prohibits them in the severest of terms.

One of the greatest and most dangerous and in the meantime — most popular corruptions of tongue is slander.

Slander mentions hidden weak points and Faults of the others so that if they hear, they will be disturbed. These points are either concerned with religious, moral, spiritual, and social aspects, or with corporeal aspects, including Face, body's limbs, corporal powers, and actions and behaviors, or his attachments, such as wife, child, and or his clothing, house, etc.

Types Of Slander:

Malice and Revenge — there is no easier and simpler way than slander and damaging a person's reputation and character For extinguishing Flames of spite and revenge, blazing in the heart of some people.

Envy — the envious person always wishes For the end of blessings of the envied one, when he cannot achieve his purpose, To compensate for it, he tries to damage the envied person's reputation and credit through slander and revealing his weak points, and relieves the Fire of his envy in this way.

Acquitting oneself From a committed sin — in other words one tries to simplify or justify his action through mentioning the Faults of others.

Mockery and deride — of course, mockery and deriding others have several motives, and after rooting its Factors in man's entity, one of the ways of realizing this goal is slander.

In the Famous tradition of Jaber and Abou Saeid Khadri, it is narrated From the Prophet (saw): Slander is worse than adultery.

The reason mentioned under this tradition For its severity is that an adulterer may be Forgiven by God through repentance (because it is the Right of God), but the repentance of the slanderer without the satisfaction of the other party, will not be accepted (because it is the Right of People).

Slander is Forbidden For each Muslim, and surely slander destroys good deeds as the Fire destroys wood.

Our Prophet (saw) has clearly explained them. One time he (saw) asked his companions: “Do you know what is backbiting?” They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He (saw) said, “Saying something about your brother that he dislikes.”

It was said, “What if what I say about my brother is true?” He (saw) said, “If what you say is true then you have backbitten about him, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.“ (Saheeh Muslim).

We should not pay attention to gossip that criticizes a Fellow Muslim or listen to it with enjoyment and hope to hear more.

Allah says, “And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.” (Quran 17:36)

The Prophet(saw) said, “Whoever defends the honor of his brother, Allah will protect his Face From the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” (Silsilah as-Sahihah)

We should remember who is the best Muslim — that the Prophet (saw) has defined For us. He (saw) said, “He is the one From whom Muslims are safe From the evil of his tongue and hands.” (Saheeh Muslim)

So, the point is —when someone slanders someone else in Front of us, stop him immediately, because whoever can slander in Front of us, will surely slander us to someone else.
