Who Knew Raindrops in Rome Would Be So Memorable

This eternal city gave me a lasting memory

Before the birth of my first child, I had a dream to see Rome. I knew after kids that traveling overseas would be more difficult.

Talking to a college friend, he and his girlfriend were interested in going with my husband and me.

His girlfriend had previously spent some time in Rome for a summer program in college. It felt like a great time in life for the four of us to go together.

So we started making plans and booking our flights.

That first day in Rome was unforgettable.

As soon as we arrived late in the afternoon, I was struck by the charm of the architecture and cobblestone alleyways.

Even though we didn’t have the key to our Airbnb, I was entertained sitting on my luggage on the street.

The view of that quaint alleyway was nothing short of inspiring.

I couldn’t get over the color of the homes, the ivy on the walls, and the ancient stones everywhere I looked. It was a natural wonder.

Once we got inside we explored our two-bedroom temporary home.

You could feel how old the place was with the art on the walls. It was historic and proper but cozy at the same time.

The view below was from right outside the balcony of our bedroom. These hidden patio spaces with greenery were like hidden gems in the city. I was intrigued by their intimate nature.

After the long flight, our friend’s girlfriend wanted to rest.

But how could I possibly rest?

I was three months pregnant but ready to explore this romantic place. My husband and I stepped into that alleyway, and we began walking back through time.

Walking among the ruins of Rome was a dream come true.

We initially found ourselves in the Piazza Navona. A beautiful public space with one of the fountains behind us. I remember getting gelato not too far from where my husband and I were standing in this picture.

We could tell it was overcast as the evening was drawing nearer, but we couldn’t make ourselves go back to the Airbnb just yet.

It was our first day in Rome, remember?

We were ready to see the sights after flying from the midwest for over 11 hours.

Nothing could keep us inside when there were so many things to see and stumble upon.

What happened that evening was magical and the absolute highlight of our first day in Rome.

As we continued to walk through those alleyways, the rain started.

There we were with no umbrella. I only had my scarf draped around my neck to put over my head.

Ordinarily, the rain would have put a damper on things.

But as it started to pour it had a warmth that was refreshing and welcoming.

As we tried to take cover, it started to pour harder.

We found ourselves dodging quickly between the small shops with very small overhangs to try to shield us.

There was no denying we were soaked head to toe.

Never have I remembered getting caught in the rain and enjoying every minute of it as I did in Rome.

Who knew that water in the form of rain drops could be so memorable?

I’m so glad Rome decided to rain on us that day.
