The Genius Behind ChatGPT: Millions of people use it but almost nobody knows the man who created it

Gather around, dear fellow readers and writers, for I have a fascinating tale to tell. It is the story of a man, a brilliant scientist who has shaped the course of AI as we know it today.

While ChatGPT has rapidly amassed millions of users, few are aware of the gifted scientist whose groundbreaking work enabled this viral AI system — Dr. Ilya Sutskever.

Dr. Sutskever displayed a precocious interest in intelligence and cognition from childhood. His family left the Soviet Union when he was young, settling in Israel where he taught himself coding at age 7.

Back to the Soviet Union, where young Ilya was born sometime in the mid-1980s. From a very early age, he was fascinated by the mysteries of the human mind and body.

“How can it be that this is my hand?” he would wonder. When his family moved to Israel and later Canada, his interest in artificial intelligence only grew stronger.

He devoured any book on machine learning he could get his hands on.

By the time he entered the University of Toronto, where he got his bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD, he knew his purpose — to create artificial general intelligence, AGI for short.
