Summary

The article uses the metaphor of "Goddess Covida" to emphasize the importance of wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and following health guidelines to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.

Abstract

The article personifies the COVID-19 virus as "Goddess Covida," a monstrous figure wreaking havoc on humanity, to illustrate the severity of the pandemic. It encourages readers to remain calm and make wise choices, such as wearing masks, which are depicted as a protective measure that can 'scare' the virus away. The importance of maintaining a six-foot distance is also highlighted, as close proximity can lead to transmission even when masks are worn. The piece underscores that while the Goddess is a fictional representation, the protective measures are very real and effective strategies recommended by health authorities like the CDC. The article concludes by advocating for these practical steps to ensure health and safety during the pandemic.

Who is Not Afraid of Goddess Covida?

Fighting her disease takes calm and good choices

Do we treat this virus as if she was a terrible, terrifying Goddess? The virus is analogous to a larger than life monstrous Goddess, the Goddess Covida, and we are afraid of her. From her face and all over her body, tubes stick out topped with little round balls. For a moment, she can infect everything with her awful disease. She storms down a mountain and spreads fear across meadows. She has snatched many people who have become gravely ill.

Protection for the Common People

Yet all people have a secret inside them. Instead of being scared, they can stay calm and pay attention. They can choose to stand tall and think of others.

They say to each other, “If she got the chance, the nasty Goddess would sicken us all. But we are not helpless. No! We have masks! With a mask on, we’re protected! We can laugh at Goddess Covida. She can’t hurt us.”

Goddess Covida is afraid of masks. When she sees them, she runs away, and everyone cheers.

Masks come in every color, in plaid and in stripes. Schoolchildren and kind ladies make masks by the hundreds. Some masks show superheroes. Some have cartoons. Some have rare birds or the best garden blooms.

So, wear your mask! Every day, have a new one, and a special one for holidays. Scare Goddess Covida and make her run fast.

Keep your distance — six feet apart

When people get too close, Covida springs up. The Goddess puts sickness right in between you. Even with masks, she’ll get the best of you, unless you are staying 6 feet apart.

This is no fun, we can’t play with friends. Someone must get rid of Goddess Covida.

Right you are! Up in the towers, we have our heroes and knights. They work on it all day, morning to night. Maybe they’ ll bring us Goddess Repellant Spray in giant yellow bottles.

Don’t take this literally, whatever you do

Goddess Covida is a made-up character, a fiction, like a scary movie made-up version of this severe viral disease. The Goddess may be imagined, but some things are real. You can be calm and make choices, the best ones you can. Wearing a mask and keeping a six-foot distance are practical ways to stay healthy and safe. Using these protections can be your choice.
