Who is Clapping But Not Reading — What Their Behaviour Is Telling You
Why do humans behave this way?
I have worked in marketing and sales my whole life.
I started in telemarketing and customer service back in 1998 after a year in Australia studying Marine Biology at University. Within three months I got bumped from telemarketing to customer service. A few months after that, I filled in for my managers as a team lead and coach.
Needless to say, my officer's training came to good use as team lead and coach motivating the sales staff to improve and outperform.
From then on, the journey took a toll for the worse, when I had my six-month crisis.
I simply could not wrap my head around selling papers for money in case something awful happened to them and their family. Yes, I worked in an insurance company. Yes, I am super high in empathy and very high in greed avoidance and that saves me from becoming a psychopath.
To survive morally I created values or boundaries that I had to follow every day at work and in life.
My Values
- I had to smile from the second I put my hand on the office door in the morning until I left the office.
- I had to know my products well enough to be able to describe the legalities to a no-verbal intelligent individual from multiple angles until he or she understood. That was my responsibility.
- If the customer was uncertain I had to ask if I should explain in another way until they completely understood what they were paying for.
- Always be Honest
- Take care of the customer and my coworkers
Now these values made me fall asleep quickly and I slept well at night knowing I did right by them.
It also made the customer want to buy insurance from me and not cancel it due to feeling deceived. The feedback loop I received was top 10 salespersons every month in the country. Then promoted to sales educator in telemarketing and customer service with cross-sales tactics.
With all that internal marketing and felt that I had not much else to learn about household insurance legislation. I applied to become a B2B salesman and they also wanted me to become a manager with my team.
However, I have chosen to work in B2B since I was young. If I was ever to create a family I needed money to support them and B2B was the way for that to happen.
As with anything in sales. They lie their asses off and you need to have your BS meter running at all times. When the 6 months education was up they presented the deal with pay and commission and I calculated they were ripping everyone off except those in the capital.
So I left and took that manager job instead that was given to me six months earlier.
As a manager, I did a great deal of data analysis and behavioral analysis from the ground up.
That included sitting beside the employee and listening in on an active conversation with the customer to help the employee improve in communication. But also to make sure they did not lie to the customer. Call it quality control. As an educational tool, we also taped conversations as do all the banks to make sure sales staff did not engage in illegal activity in case the customer filed a complaint.
After listening to, and having, thousands of conversations I learned a great deal about human communication and greed.
Within the scope of being a sales manager you also constantly monitor the sales staff in other illegal activities. Yes, both women and men, when working for money, do illegal things to make more money even if it means getting fired.
It is a psychopathic and sadistic trait and all psychopaths are drawn to money and have no problems taking it from others. You see. A Psychopath sees it as if you have taken the money from someone else.
Therefore it is ok for them to take it off your hands without anything happening. They justify it that way.
YouTube Mentality
For those of you who do not watch YouTube, you might not be aware of all the YouTubers that “HELP” all new YouTubers succeed on YouTube!
I see the very same strategy here at Medium. The very first day, the first one appeared on my first story clapping away. Fishing for me to notice and be joyful I received claps. Only to see that the individual did not read my article.
That is what psychology calls being Deceitful. The sad part is that those individuals will not read this article just clap on it. I find it to be strange behaviour since I the opposite. I have to read first and then clap if I give myself something.
However, I do get the notion of it being somewhat kind as a gesture for new writers so that they feel welcome. And I should say that I very much did feel welcomed on Medium from day one.
Anyhow, it is measured in the Honesty & Humility trait in the HEXACO model.
The lower you are. The more likely you are a Psychopath, Machiavellian, Narcissist, and Sadist. More precisely 53.8% probability according to Howard and Zandt.

Risk Takers and Greedy Behaviour
Where ever there is Money involved you will find Dark Tetrad, Anti Social, individuals lurking among the normal people.
They are usually between 1–3% of any given population. Medium is no exception. Where there is a penny to be made, there they are.
I am talking about behaviours since you do not have to be a pathological psychopath, machiavellian/machs, narcissist or sadist to behave like one.
Only psychopathy and narcissism are disorders and the rest are behaviours.
Greed is linked in the psychological and criminological scientific research as being psychopathic. Greed is usually found in politics and financial work as accounting, Stockmarket’s, sales, marketing and CEO’s. There is a large bulk of research talking about testing individuals before you hire them in order NOT to hire a Dark Tetrad Personality individual.
Male as well as Female.
Because once they are in power they will destroy the company.
These people are not good people like the givers like Adam Grant describes them as. Instead he refers to them as Takers. The male brain is the risk taker since men live shorter lives due to the weaker immune system that XY combination gives in relation to the superior XX combination.
If you look at any government statistics you see that men start dying off after 67 years of age.
The proportion of women in the society increases thereafter very rapidly among women and men over 67 years of age.
I would not advise any man to save much for retirement but instead invest in his health and live his life before it ends earlier than he thinks. Not being truthful will give you cardiovascular disease.
Talk about bad karma.
The Science behind the behaviour
This comes back to Maslows Hierarchy of Need that he presented back in 1943.
The first three levels are the ones to pay attention to.
- Physical needs — Access to toilets, food, water and sex. This is regulated by your Hypotalamus.
- Physical safety — You need to feel safe as a team member within the group. This comes back to Honesty & Humility.
- Social safety — This refers to Psychological safety and being loved. Safety from being cancelled or talked about behind your back. It is referred to as Female Indirect aggression and this is something girls learn at six years of age and mainly targets other girls/women. Workplaces are not excluded from this. Some men also use this type of aggression. It is all about your reputation.
In order for people to feel safe they need money in the world.
It is much harder to attract a partner without money if you are a man which David Buss found through his research around the world. Women are attracted to men with money or potential to earn money. This is an underlying biological driver in any society which explains male behaviours well.
But also how Medium gives anti social women a platform as Instagram or the other social platforms do.
97–99% of women and men are normal social honest and humble people.
Checking your Analytics — Write Because You Love It
Since I am a Marketer, Researcher and User Experience Designer by trade I love to work with factual data since you cannot trust human verbal language.
What people say is never reality. Humans have three subsystems systems that checks the other system so that you do not say something anti social. So let the data speak the truth instead.
That is why we do User Testing in UX Design. To see how a user performs when interacting with a product either in an app, website or using a physical tool.
People that are looking to get rich quickly on others expense are deceitful as humans and low in Honesty & Humility.
Because we know that Conscientiousness and working hard every day is the opposite of that. Karma will deal with them sooner than they think. Don’t get fooled by them so that you get discouraged. Focus on writing and less on what others say or do. This is not Instagram, TickTock or Facebook where the data is clear that women and as little clothes as possible works the best.
You can’t sell skin and BS when only using text and that is why main stream media and news outlets are sacking most of their journalists.
You will find those deceitful individuals on Medium in the coming year trying to survive propagating their old deceitful information they got fired for to begin with.
Write because it is you passion and it will show in the text.
