Who I Am Led To Why I Write

Introducing Lucia Siochi, Writer

Dr Mehmet Yildiz asked Illumination and Illumination-Curated writers to prepare a bio, so the publications’ readers could get to know their writers better.

I’ve been trying to figure out what to put in it, how to structure it, etc. I took a look at other writers’ bios to get some ideas, but they didn’t really click with me.

While I was preparing my breakfast smoothie this morning, it hit me. I just need to talk about who I am (the bio part) and why I write (the writer part).

So here goes!

Who Am I?

Good question! I’m still trying to figure that out!

But seriously…

When I was a little girl, I had what was called an autograph book. It was a popular thing at the time. On each page, you could put in your friend’s information. Name, nickname, sign, height, favorite color, and other things they liked.

So here’s part of my current autograph profile:

  • Favorite Animal: Cat
  • Favorite Color: Purple
  • Favorite Dish: Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and Meatballs
  • Favorite Cake: Devil’s Food Cake with Whipped Cream Icing (real whipped cream, not the pre-made kind)
  • Sign: Leo
  • Personality: Introvert. Feeling, Sensitive Person. Analytical. Detail-oriented. Sometimes funny. Sometimes silly.
  • Hobbies: Jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, singing, cooking, painting, adult coloring, reading, writing
  • My idea of a good time: Sitting in the catio writing a story with a cup of coffee, a beautiful blue sky, no humidity, and cool weather. The cats are throwing themselves at the screen trying to catch the squirrel that’s taunting them inches away from the screen door.

Today, I suppose this would be described as a profile. It’s funny how over the decades, with upheavals in society and advances in technology, all we really want to know is, what is your favorite color.

Why I Write

I’ve been writing all my life, but it was for school or work. Reports, documentation, instructions. Chats, instant messages. So many emails, carefully crafted.

It was only early this year when I started writing for myself. It began as therapy and turned into self-expression. It’s much easier for me to express myself through writing than through talking.

So why do I write?

I write because it helps me corral and process the scattered clouds of feelings and proto-thoughts strewn about in my head. It helps me to form them more clearly and organize them. It helps me to understand both myself and Life better. It helps me to think.

I write because there are things inside me that want to be said. No one will ever know the complexity and depth of what’s going on in me if I don’t share it. No one will ever know what I’ve figured out about life if I don’t share it. No one will ever benefit from my experience if I don’t share it.

Final Thoughts

Who I am led to why I write.

Many people write because it’s a way to help others. But there are many ways to help others. I’ve tried several over the years and found they mostly took too much out of me. That’s of no help to me or anyone else.

There’s a reason they tell you, on the airplane, to put your own oxygen mask on first, before you help anyone else with their oxygen mask.

Writing is a way to help others while honoring who I am and how I function, allowing me to take proper care of myself and help others at the same time!

I hope my words, past, present, and future, make both your life and my life better!

Thanks for reading!
