Who Do I Write For?
B.U.Hub Publication Contest, Universe-Love-Soul
I have been writing on Medium for about 3 months now and I have been writing in general for far longer than that.
I think I wrote my first poem when I was in middle school.
My first song in high school.
My first blog during my degree, and every day since I have been very vocal about my views on social media via my writings.
I write on social media questioning others’ belief systems when they are different than mine. The intent is not to prove them wrong but to learn from the experiences both of my own and others.
Every conversation makes me feel better since either I learn something new, or have shared something new with others. I feel more accomplished with every word I write. Something within me feels refreshed, renewed, and happy.
I used to wonder what I truly write for.
Then it struck me, maybe I truly write for something embedded deep within me, my soul.
What Is A Soul?
The soul is the essence of a person’s identity, personality, and beliefs.
I am my soul, my soul is me.
I am not a religious person so soul does not have any religious relevance to me.
For me soul is the voice deep down in me that helps me identify right from wrong.
My soul inspires me to voice my opinion against injustice.
It teaches me to be empathetic to other’s pain.
It teaches me to Love.
Soul ensures that at every moment of my life, I am me.
How Does Writing Help?
Writing is very different from conversations with others, writing is our conversation with our soul.
When we are speaking to a crowd or a person we are externalizing our ideas, and trying to take in new ones. Writing on the other hand helps us understand ourselves, and our being.
Writing is often said to be therapeutic, and I think the reason it is unlike speaking, writing is deeper. When we write a story, a poem, or recollect personal experience, for the duration of writing we are in deep conversation with our soul.
Have you ever had a situation when while writing you suddenly realised things about your being that you had never thought of?
Recollecting many life stories often gives you a new viewpoint about an experience long after it was lived. Where do these viewpoints come from?
I think our soul is subconsciously evolving with the experiences we have. Reassessing not just what is happening in the present, but also re-evaluating our choices from our past. These reevaluations need a platform to present itself, writing is that platform.
When we are deep in writing, we have the most important conversation, the one with our soul. This is when our soul gets a platform to realize its true potential.
Conclusion
So getting back to my question, why do I write? Well, I write for my soul.
I consider writing as an important conversation that helps me learn more about myself.
The conversation could be humorous, or spiritual, about my growth, my life, or my family.
Writing is the conversation that clarifies my perspective. In the crowd and noise of this world, writing is the only moment when I am one with my soul. With no distractions to distract me from my being, only my thoughts and me trying to find a purpose for our existence in this Universe.
These are my thoughts about my writing and my soul. Your understanding might be different.
Do these thoughts resonate with your reasons for writing?
What is your understanding of the soul? Does writing impact it?
