Who Benefits Most From A Divided America?
Criminal investigators always ask themselves a crucial question when starting on a new case. Who stands to benefit the most from the crime? I ask you this question: who stands to gain the most from sowing division and hatred in America?
This critical question must be asked. Especially since the American people are pitted against each other – Trump devotees versus Biden supporters. Families are being torn apart, polarized. Mothers and sons are no longer speaking to each other, lifelong friends have become enemies, people find themselves at odds with one another. Who benefits from all of this turmoil?
It appears that China and Russia supported a Trump victory. Why is this? Probably because they wanted to keep a fool in the Oval Office who wouldn’t intervene with their political, economic, and geographical expansion agenda. I could imagine a conversation between both the Russians and the Chinese:
“Let us continue to distract the tantrum-ridden toddler in the White House. Let’s caress his ego, give him a few business deals, and then let’s get on with our expansion plans and human rights abuses”.
Indeed, with Trump in place for another 4 years, among many other things, China could continue its muzzling of Hong Kong, and Russia could continue its backdoor dealings in the Ukraine and in Syria. Even though he lost, Trump is still playing right into their hands by sowing even more division in America by contesting the US Presidential election results. A distracted and divided US is an opportunity for authoritarian regimes all over the world.
What Trump doesn’t realize, however, is that he is undermining the very notion of democracy itself. And by this, I mean democracy as a form of governance for societies around the world. He is giving democracy bad publicity.
Foolishly, ego-inflated Trump still thinks the Chinese and Russians support him because he is a stable genius – he doesn’t realize that it is his very stupidity and lack of knowledge and curiosity of geopolitical affairs that make him the perfect target. They pretend to like him because he has made it easier for them to get on with their business unimpeded.
As the US turns more and more inwards, authoritarian governments, despots, and terrorist groups are committing all types of horrendous atrocities. Minorities all over the world are paying a high price because the policeman of the world – America, has resigned from the job.
Even with a Biden administration, I’m not sure the US will ever endorse that role again. The country is divided and it will take years — if ever, for it to come back together. And that is a tragedy for humanity in and of itself. The oppressed, wherever they may be, will no longer be able to hope that someone – America, is coming to the rescue. That makes for a ruthless and very different kind of world.
There are over 78,000 conflicts taking place around the world right now, and these have resulted in more than 90,000 deaths this year alone. Many of them involve minority groups being persecuted because of their skin color, their gender, their political views, their sexual orientation, their culture, their religion. People are getting slaughtered because they are different – and now no one, absolutely no one will come to correct the wrongdoings – to save them. That feeling of hopelessness must be untenable.
And so, while America navel gazes, Islamic State-affiliated extremists, decapitated more than 50 innocent civilians in Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique on US Election day. Close to 450,000 people have been displaced and at least 2,000 have been killed in this Muslim province where extreme poverty runs alongside rich extractive oil and gas operations owned by Chinese, US, and British companies. The Mozambican government can no longer cope and asked the world for assistance in managing the conflict — their pressing demands fell on deaf ears. It’s most likely that more civilians will die as a result.
And then there is the case of Afghanistan, where on US election day, armed gunmen stormed Kabul University and took 22 innocent civilian lives. Trump vows that US troops will soon be leaving Afghanistan. So here again, people will be left to die.
And then there is China, keen to get Hong Kong under its boot. On US election day they expelled several opposition politicians from Hong Kong’s legislative assembly thereby making it abundantly clear that they would not tolerate any form of democracy or free speech there. I cringe at what might happen to Taiwan if China takes the route of repression there as well. Will the US come to the rescue or will Taiwan be left to fend for itself?
I’m barely scratching the surface here on conflicts that are ongoing. What type of a world will this be if despots, dictators, terrorists, and religious fanatics get away with bullying, intimidation, arbitrary killings, rape, forced labor, and outright genocide? Can we still consider ourselves human beings if we as a collective allow this to happen?
One might ask, but why the US? Why can’t somebody else be the policeman of the world? The reality is that there are no other democracies with the breath and might of the US to take on the likes of China and Russia. No other democracy wields such power, so that is why the world needs America — whether we like it or not.
I know, American imperialism and occupation can be challenging, but what other choice do we have? Especially if we want to hold on to democracy, to freedom of expression. Sometimes, life comes down to a simple choice: which is the better of two evils: live under authoritarianism or something that resembles democracy. As a writer, I choose the latter.
Thanks for reading my perspective.
