Who and What Inspires You?

A call for submissions from The DIY Diaries

As you may recall from my previous post, I’m able to nominate DIY-themed stories for Medium’s boost, as part of the pilot program for publication editors.

This means that I need you to send in stories so that I can nominate them! Please keep reading for a new DIY Diaries writing prompt to follow later in this story.

Part of the idea of the pilot program is that editors are meant to nominate stories from their own publications. We can also nominate self-published stories in our subject area. Currently, I’m able to nominate five stories per week.

Some of the stories I’ve nominated have indeed been boosted, such as Annie Trevaskis’ reflections on swimming and creativity.

And I was very happy to see that this story from Alicia Domínguez was accepted for a boost. She’s been sending thoughtful work to our publication since the beginning, and I love how this story finds layers of meaning in crochet.

Chloe ~ Calendula Craft’s story about making herbal smoke bundles from local materials also received a boost. If you’re not following Chloe yet, be sure to check out her work as she writes a lot about slow living, crafting, writing, gardening, and more.

For our new writing prompt (and please remember that you can always submit about any of our older prompts at any time!), I’d like you to think about who or what inspires you to create.

What’s something that got you interested in DIY? Did you learn to build a birdhouse as a kid and then kept up with woodworking as an adult? Did you watch a video recently that inspired you to sit down and do some art journaling?

And who are your DIY inspirations? Did your parents or grandparents or other people from your childhood do DIY projects? Did you have a teacher who motivated you to create?

If this prompt looks familiar, it’s because it’s an important theme to me. In fact, I wrote a story a couple years ago about my grandma as a DIY fashionista. I always admired how she didn’t pay attention to trends and did her own thing. Her quiet iconoclasm still motivates me to do what I want, whether it’s how I dress or what I choose to write poems about or anything, really.

So please take a page out of Grandma Dagmar’s book and do whatever YOU want when it comes to writing about your own creative projects, ideas, home and garden activities, and more. I invite your stories related to this writing prompt, or to anything under our large umbrella of DIY.

Thanks for reading this, and please do give The DIY Diaries a follow if you haven’t yet, as that helps with the distribution of our stories!

Amanda Laughtland
