POETRY

While the Dog Got Old

Time doesn’t stop for anyone, not even for a good boy.

Hollister Dog — Author’s Photo and own lovely dog

the dog got old while I wasn’t looking he was under my feet the whole time

walkies used to be tug-of-war his pull on the leash was so hard grown men were felled like trees

while I was busy running errands going to work looking for “me” time the dog was turning grey

it seems like only last night he sat at my feet and vetted my dates

I stopped dating years ago there is no denying it now he’s old and so am I he has become rickety and I am round as a house

wasn’t it only last summer that he and his sister tripped the neighborhood kids and toppled them

joyfully surrounding their giggling bodies like fiendish dog weirdos so they could mercilessly lick little child ears and faces with long dog tongues

today I cried watching him stagger and trying to get air

he cannot control his bladder he used to enjoy peeing on stuff now, he just pees on himself

the dog got old when I wasn’t looking oh, this dog he got so old when I wasn’t looking

tomorrow we go to the vet probably for the last time I know it’s morose and morbid

but I can feel it

that damn dog he’s such a good boy and I love him

I really do

I am going to miss him for a very long time

Update 9/14/2022: He is gone. And, oh! I miss him. ❤

Update 7/14/2022: The dog did NOT die, as I thought he would. The neighbors and I all cried sad tears and said our goodbyes. He looked pretty bad. The following morning he was revived. I canceled the vet. He continues to play, gobble cookies, and has taken to pooping inside on hot days…because why not do your business in the A/C on a soft carpet instead of on the grass outside under the hot searing sun? Yes, my boy is alive and still running the show. ❤
