Summary

The author reflects on the stressful experience of commuting to work by car, realizing the missed opportunities for enjoying life's simple pleasures due to a focus on punctuality and safety.

Abstract

The author describes a personal experience of the daily stress involved in driving to work, emphasizing the physical symptoms of stress such as a fast heart rate and rapid breathing. Despite usually arriving on time, the author acknowledges the high personal cost of this routine, including the missed beauty of morning scenes such as a couple's farewell, playful dogs in the park, and the sun's interplay with nature. The narrative suggests that the author's singular focus on the commute, enhanced by music and the need to navigate around unsafe drivers, has led to a sacrifice of precious moments and a less fulfilling experience of daily life.

Opinions

  • The author believes that the stress of commuting is self-imposed due to not leaving earlier.
  • There is an opinion that the rush of the commute causes one to miss out on enjoyable and peaceful moments of life.
  • The author implies that the journey to work could be more than just a routine; it could be an opportunity to witness and appreciate the small wonders of daily life.
  • The author seems to regret not being more present and mindful during the commute.
  • There is a subtle critique of the author's own habit of prioritizing punctuality over mental well-being and enjoyment of the environment.

While driving my car to work, I sensed an urgency which was familiar.

If I didn’t hurry, I was going to be late.

I typically arrived on time, but at what cost?

With my eyes fixed on the road, a fast heart rate, and breathing too quickly for comfort, I realized how much stress I caused myself by not leaving earlier.

And how many wonders of the morning did I miss?

Did a husband kiss his wife goodbye on the patio?

Were there dogs and their owners playing in the park?

Was the sun reflecting off the trees?

I didn’t notice anything.

My focus was following my usual route — listening to tunes and avoiding careless drivers.

Sure, I got to work on time, but I lost out on many precious moments.
