Which Zodiac Sign Corresponds with Each Character Class?
Astrology Meets Dungeons & Dragons
Dungeons and Dragons has twelve iconic classes in the Players Handbook — the class provides the frame work of a new character. Character classes are built based on the three aspects of the tabletop role-playing game(TRPG): exploration, social interactions, and combat. A well-rounded party might have a passionate barbarian, a glamorous bard, and a sensible ranger.
Astrology has twelve signs that spread across a person’s birth chart. Zodiac signs have traits that rest on modalities, elemental associations, and ruling planets. For example: Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn, which could bring traits such as motivation, patience, and discipline.
Neither a character’s stat sheet nor a person’s birth chart determines everything about the player/soul behind the curtain. There are many variables in D&D and Astrology, but we are going to be playing around with traits that align with classes and signs. Have you ever wondered which zodiac sign corresponds with each character class?
Aries — Barbarian
Barbarians are known for their passion and confidence. When exploring, they are most likely walking ahead of the party and would be the first to sense any danger along the path. Barbarians might use charisma and wisdom to balance their social game. High constitution can help barbarians drink the entire tavern under the table, but when a brawl breaks out, their strength will be what keeps the party out of harms way.
Aries is also well known for their fervor and courage. As a cardinal sign, Aries is a natural leader in any group. The elemental association with Aries is fire — giving the sign high energy and spontaneous qualities. Aries is ruled by the planet Mars, which relates to ambition and adventure. Although I believe barbarian is a perfect match for Aries, my alternative picks are sorcerer and fighter.
Taurus — Monk
Monks are commonly conscientious and observant. During travel, they move lightly with intention and may even stop for a meditation. Wisdom is the staple mental trait for the monk which can be used to set the pace in a social encounter or recognize when someone’s lying. When combat begins, monks use their Ki charged movements and strikes to neutralize the threat.
Taurus can be portrayed as reliable and mindful as well. It’s a fixed sign which expresses independence among the group. As an earth sign, Taurus displays steadfast and sensible characteristics. Venus is Taurus’ ruling planet which represents values and pleasure (i.e. a virtuous monk committed to non attachment of materialistic desires). I think this is a solid pick, but for any doubters — my auxiliary choices are ranger and barbarian.
Gemini — Bard
Bards are very versatile and beguiling characters. On the road, they are serenading the group with their latest ballad inspired by the party’s previous adventure or firing off quick quips about their rivals. Bards can be charismatic to a fault, which might avoid or stir up trouble in a social setting. When a conflict does arise, they use their many skills and spells to avoid harm or support their allies.
Gemini is the sign of adaptability and charm. Its mutable modality exhibits a resourceful team player. The element related to Gemini is air which manifests chaotic and comedic habits. Gemini’s ruling planet is Mercury, illustrating an emphasis on communication and learning. Bard is an obvious match for Gemini, however my other class options are monk and warlock.
Cancer — Cleric
Clerics are quite instinctive and vigilant party members. They occupy a calculated space when moving with a group to ensure they can provide proper support and protection to their allies. When faced with social encounters, clerics have the ability to balance their clever personality with religious faith and community. Although they tend to serve as the medic, clerics’ offensive and defensive tactics give them a competitive edge in combat.
Cancer is best known for being highly intuitive and nurturing. With a cardinal mode, Cancer holds emotional and spiritual authority. Water is the element that gives this sign its badges of loyalty and compassion. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, which brings themes of mental power and overall well-being. I stand by this match made in heaven, but paladin or druid are acceptable answers.
Leo — Sorcerer
Sorcerers are without a doubt, enthusiastic and bold. Born amidst chaos, they can be found in any and every position while traveling with their company. Sorcerers can easily serve as the face of the party — using their magmatism to manipulate the conversation and navigate the crowd. If there is a sorcerer in the fight, everyone will be able to tell. Their spectacular magic creates a flamboyantly fatal scene.
Leo is most definitely vehement and audacious. They are fixed, taking on the role of the staunch facilitator. As a fire sign, Leo evinces bravery and creativity. The Sun is the ruling celestial body of this sign and communicates symbols of ego as well as heroism. Sorcerer is the right fit here, nevertheless bard and paladin could be suitable Leos.
Virgo — Druid
Druids are down-to-earth and logical. While traveling, they can be found on the outskirts of the path collecting herbs or communicating with small creatures. Druids can have difficulty in social events, yet their high wisdom and intelligence will suffice. One should keep their distance from a druid on the battlefield. Whether in bear form or slinging magical support, they dominate the map.
Virgo can be pragmatic and methodical. As a mutable sign, they float from one position to the next with ease. The element associated with Virgo is earth, demonstrating Virgo’s empirical stability. This sign is also ruled by the planet Mercury, granting analytical skills and general intellect. I’d consider ranger and fighter (and artificer) to be good prospects, but druid is a natural pick for Virgo.
Libra — Paladin
Paladins are the most charming and judicious characters. Whether it be by horseback or on foot, they are leading the unit while keeping a look out for any forsaken souls. Paladins love and excel in social situations — they seem to be always seducing someone. Their martial prowess coupled with religious magic proves to be an unstoppable force and a blessing to the party.
Libras are by far the most lovable and well-balanced people. They are of the cardinal modality, which makes them a perfect team captain. The element associated with Libra is air. This displays their aura of individuality and achievement. Ruled by Venus, Libra exudes the regal aesthetic. Although the front runner is paladin, bard and rogue are competitive selections.
Scorpio — Rogue
Rogues are fearless and discreet. If you’re lucky, they might be found surreptitiously scouting the perimeter of the party. Rogues are adept at many things. They are masters of social intrigue and can outwit or outperform anyone. No one knows when a rogue will disappear into the shadows — only to reappear after delivering a devastating strike from behind enemy lines.
Scorpios are intrepid and prudent. They are fixed, giving them the tendency to rarely divert from their preferred group or intended path. As a water sign, they deliver mystical intuition and brainpower. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto and Mars, granting themes of transformation, death, action, and survival. Rogue is a clear winner for Scorpio that only warlock and sorcerer could rival.
Sagittarius — Ranger
Rangers are independent and adventurous. They are probably tracking the party’s target and foraging for food, while remaining completely aware of their surroundings. As natural explorers, rangers are comfortable in almost any social environment. They have a good mix of martial and magical abilities used to support their team or cripple their enemies.
Sagittarius is free-spirited and dynamic. They are mutable and find themselves flowing from one spot to the next. Fire is the element that represents this sign, generating their gifted style and valor. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, which represents optimism and success. Ranger is a powerful choice, but I could see Sagittarius being a bard or even a wizard.
Capricorn — Fighter
Fighters are practical and diligent. They will be found in the front of the pack preparing to take a hit for their friends. Although fighters are more or less tanks, they can still flex their skills during social encounters. When the action begins, they already have a plan to beat back their foes and defend their allies.
Capricorn is a hands-on and hardworking kind of sign. It’s a cardinal sign, which produces the ability to lead and guide others. The element associated with Capricorn is earth. This gives way to its naturally active and tenacious traits. Saturn rules this sign, which reflects discipline and concentration. This is the most feasible pick for Capricorn, but I like monk and ranger as alternatives.
Aquarius — Warlock
Warlocks are are clever and self-reliant. On the road, they are probably interacting with their other worldly patron or quietly investigating magical phenomena. Their high charisma keeps them gliding their way through public events. On the battlefield, they are a force to be reckoned with. They taunt their enemies before annihilating them in eldritch fashion.
Aquarius is witty and independent. As a fixed sign, they are immovable when set on a task or idea. Air is the element that represents Aquarius, giving the sign elusive and puckish traits. Uranus and Saturn are joint rulers of Aquarius. Together these planets bring themes of imagination, radical change, wisdom, and karma. This is the most logical pick, but I can see Aquarius acting as rogues and wizards
Pisces — Wizard
Wizards are gifted and ingenious. These magical experts can fill a variety of positions and spend half of their day in spell books. Their balanced intelligence grants them the ability to avert any public humiliation. Whether it be defending a noble, slaying a monster, or supporting a siege the wizard has a spell for that.
Pisces is highly creative and intuitive. Their mutable modality grants them the freedom to play many parts within a group. Pisces is a water sign, which makes them receptive and adaptable. Neptune is the ruler of this sign and symbolizes inspiration as well as mysticism. I think this is the proper choice for Pisces, but am willing to explore other options such as monk or druid.
Conclusion
The twelve zodiacs don’t match perfectly with any one class in the players handbook. There are many nuances in D&D and Astrology that we haven’t addressed. Sub-class, race, background, and multi-classing would need to be cross-referenced with specific planets, houses, aspects, and degrees in order to really meet the requirements of such a task.
It would be interesting to try to create a character sheet based on or inspired by a person’s birth chart. Even a calculated approach would still leave room for debate within the crease of these two niches. One astrologer might interpret a birth chart differently than the next just as two players may use the same character sheet and get different results.
I conjured this list in response to an ill-advised Instagram post born from the partnership between the producers of Honor Among Thieves and the marketers of Sanctuary. They wasted everyones time with some quick pairings of signs and classes. The most infuriating part is they used the six signs represented in the movie as opposed to all twelve classes. How could they waste the potential of an opportunity like that?
On the bright side, I had so much fun properly grouping signs to classes. If Sanctuary didn’t make such a hilariously disappointing post, I would’ve never written this article. Cheers to the two guilds responsible! May the stars align and guide you on your quest!
