I have seen the open moon Free born — I have seen it With its scowl cowering in my eyes Beaming down upon this duplicitous soul Enveloping me between its enduring web Yet, intrigued not I, by folly nor gay abandon Nor those two deceivers, spring, summer, nor even winter’s fall For me long ago those dreams went abandoned In vain they entice me; nor do they encapsulate me, nor forestall Nor indulge me when either the Montagues or Capulets call Still be, I have felt nature’s soft wants, witnessed her free and open range across the heavens Her temperamental change — I have felt the mistletoe rage Out upon that windswept plain, that open field, under that majestic gaze, all places be I have been called wantonly: hark! Where is thy gentle kiss Do you exist — where does Juliet even now resist Has she fallen or have the ages befallen us – no longer to feel such sweet surrender The pull of that sweet temptress from above in all her mystery and shining glory Has her nature forever changed Does she stray Or has she abandoned me Am I resigned to cede to the dawn, her false caress Under such a timid moon With its spell resisted by the light of yet another dying day
