Summary

A young man, Wolfe, involved in the May 2020 protests, has been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay $12 million in restitution for his role in the violence and destruction, which has been described as a life-altering mistake.

Abstract

In the aftermath of George Floyd's death, protests erupted, and during these events, a 23-year-old named Wolfe participated in the destruction of property, including attempting to burn down the Minneapolis Third Precinct headquarters. He was subsequently arrested and found guilty of conspiracy to commit arson. Wolfe, along with a co-conspirator, has been sentenced to several years in prison and a staggering $12 million restitution charge, which raises questions about the feasibility of such financial penalties being paid by young individuals with no prior criminal record. The article reflects on the broader impact of the protests, noting that many lives have been adversely affected beyond the tragic death of George Floyd.

Opinions

  • The article suggests that Wolfe's decision to join the protests and engage in criminal activities has irreversibly damaged his life at a very young age.
  • There is an implication that the restitution amount of $12 million is unrealistic for individuals like Wolfe and his co-conspirator to pay, contrasting with the financial resources cities might have to compensate victims of crime.
  • The text conveys a perspective that the actions of Wolfe and others during the protests put lives at risk and caused significant damage, extending the tragedy of George Floyd's death to affect many other lives.
  • The author seems to emphasize the transformation of individuals from presumably law-abiding citizens to criminals as a result of the violent turn of the protests.

A wrong choice can change a life quickly

What was he thinking? A young man named Wolfe had joined in the protests in May 2020. He has now been ordered to pay $12 million in restitution for damages he helped cause. He has also been sentenced to three and a half years in prison. He has basically ruined his life. He is just twenty-three years old.

George Floyd died after his encounter with the police in Minneapolis. He had unknowingly or knowingly used a $20 counterfeit bill to make a purchase at a small store. The employee called the police. Floyd was held on the ground with a police officer’s knee against his neck. He proclaimed he could not breathe. That was the truth, and he died.

The protests three days later turned violent in many areas. People tried to burn down the Minneapolis Third Precinct headquarters. Hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the police station. The crowd tore down a fence and surrounded the building. They were chanting, “burn it down.”

Wolfe pushed a barrel to the entrance of the police headquarters where a fire was burning. He also stole several items such as a police vest, duty belt, handcuffs, an earpiece, a riot helmet, police radio, and other items.

Wolfe was arrested on June 3, 2020, while he was wearing the police vest and the duty belt which he had stolen from the police. He was carrying the tactical baton that he had taken.

In December 2020, Wolfe pleaded guilty in Minneapolis U.S. District Court to one count of conspiracy to commit arson.

A twenty-three-year-old co-conspirator of Wolfe was sentenced to four years in prison and $12 million in restitution.

Cities must often pay millions of dollars in restitution to the families of victims of crime. Where are these two young men going to get $12 million each to pay restitution?

The two were accused of leaving a lawful protest and engaging in violence and destruction, which put lives at risk. The destruction caused by these two men and their other co-conspirators did extreme damage that night. The other two will be sentenced at a later date.

It is likely that they were not criminals before that night.

The killing of George Floyd was a tragic event that ruined many lives. Besides the death of Floyd, many other lives were adversely affected by the actions of protesters.
