Where Will Future Jobs Come From?
You're being replaced, Jack and Jill

I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords or not.
Our world is rapidly changing, but where does it leave the average worker? I'm not talking about those that have a high skill level, but this that do essential jobs. Many of these basic jobs pay pretty well, and the job supports a family.
In our new world of "tech," many of these jobs will disappear. Automation is taking over, and with that comes robotics. So, where will everyone that isn't a "techie" work?
Jobs Lost to Automation
Last month, I was on Vancouver Island and walked into a Wal-Mart to pick something up for my wife. I was shocked when I got to the "teller" because there wasn't one. The store was full of automated checkouts with only two stations for cash transactions. That may be convenient for people, but those are jobs that could be filled by retirees, school kids, or mothers needing to feed their kids.
Here's some of the jobs automation is set to replace:
- Accountants and Tax Preparers
- Assembly and Manufacturing Workers
- Umpires and Referees
- Loan Officers
- Real Estate Appraisers
- Postal Service Workers
- Travel Agents
- Jewelers
- Utility Meter Readers
- Security Guards
- Receptionists and Secretaries
- Paralegals
- Bank Tellers
- Auto Mechanics and Repair Technicians
- Transportation
This is ONLY a partial list!
All these workers contribute to the economy. What do they do with no job? No one seems to answer that questions. Who employees the people that do our day-to-day work?
Not Everyone Can Be a Techie
I wanted to be a software developer, so I took online university courses. I got high marks in all the written content, but the math? LOL. I tried as hard as I could. I hired a tutor but only managed a C+ in Statistics. Math literally toasts my brain.
I should have known then to take more writing courses. My nephew tried to be an engineer but couldn't do the math. A large portion of "techie" jobs requires high analytical skills and good math skills, which not everyone has. I HATE math!
I know someone in school who could have the answer before the teacher had the question down on the board! These are the people destined for techie jobs.
What will all the workers who aren't technically inclined do for work? No one has the answer.
Job Loss Void
Imagine taking courses and working most of your adult life and then finding you're being replaced by R2D2.

We'll have a huge swath of unemployed people. Not everyone can be "retrained," as many of our "new" jobs will require good skills. Some people simply aren't capable of doing this sort of job. This is reality.
Planning Needs to Be Made
I'm the first one to say that automation, AI, and robotics are the wave of the future. It's where we're going. The whole point is to ensure that EVERYONE can still work and earn a living.
Summary
If robots are to complete most of our tasks, traditional workers will still need a way to support themselves. Where are the answers for the retirees, school kids trying to pay for education, or those that are supporting families?
I hear no answers.
