Where to Submit Short Stories: 10 Magazines and Websites That Pay at Least $50

Once your short story is complete, this is where you can submit it.

You won’t get rich writing short stories, however, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to pay a bill or two.

If you write short literary or genre fiction there is a magazine or website just waiting to publish your work.

Since I don’t believe in writing for free, I’ve compiled a list of publications that will pay at least $50 for your submissions.

Find the publications that are best for your short stories and start submitting your work.

1. One Story

Submission Guidelines Pay: $500 + 25 Contributor copies One story accepts literary fiction only and stories have to be between 3000 and 8000 words. There are no restrictions on style and subject. Ultimately they are looking for “… stories that leave readers feeling satisfied and are strong enough to stand alone.”

2. The Three Penny Review

Submission Guidelines Pay: $400 for short stories The Three Penny Review is a quarterly art house magazine that focuses on art, theatre, culture, memoir, essays, and society. Submissions can be no more than 4000 words. They don’t accept any submissions from July 1 to December 31. You can submit work via mail or online.

3. Barrelhouse

Submission Guidelines Pay: $50 + two contributor copies + access to one online issue. Barrelhouse is a biannual journal and online publication. Their goal is to “bridge the gap between serious art and pop culture.” While not set in stone, submissions should be kept under 8000 words.

4. The Georgia Review

Submission Guidelines Pay: $50 per printed page Only send your very best work to The Georgia Review. Unlike other publications on the list, there is a $3 processing fee when submitting your work. All topics and styles are welcome.

5. Boulevard Magazine

Submission Guidelines Pay: $100 to $300 Boulevard Magazine’s focus is on unpublished writers, so if you don’t have any writing credits this is a good place to start. They post fiction and non-fiction up to 8000 words. There are some restrictions on the topics they accept to check the submission guidelines to see if your work qualifies.

6. Camera Obscura

Submission Guidelines Pay: $1000 for one featured writer This one almost didn’t make the list since not everyone gets paid. However, a shot at $1000 is worth a place on the list.

7. Flash Fiction Online

Submission Guidelines Pay: $60 per story Flash Fiction Online has a word count of 500 to 1000 words. While accepting most topics they have a preference for sci-fi and fantasy.

8. The Sun Magazine

Submission Guidelines Pay: $300 to $2000 + one year subscription The word count for Sun Magazine is 7000 words but the content can be just about anything. With that said, the magazine has a special fondness for personal essays, politics and culture writing.

9. Virginia Quarterly (VQR)

Submission Guidelines Pay: $1000+ Short fiction should be between 2000 to 8000 words. Stay away from genres such as sci-fi, romance, erotica, etc. as they are not a fan.

10. Carve Magazine

Submission Guidelines Pay: $100 Only literary fiction for Carve magazine, but poems and non-fiction works are accepted as well. You have a lot of room to tell a story at Carve as they have a 10,000 max word count.

Your writing isn’t doing you any favors sitting on a computer collecting dust.

If you’re looking to earn an income as a writer, submitting your work to publications that pay is apart of that process.

So, bookmark this page, and when you’re ready, submit your work to each of these publications.

Even a rejection means you made an effort, but who knows you may just get accepted and have at least a cool $50 to go along with being published in an established magazine.

This is How I Made $135 Dollars in My First 30 Days On Medium

Only seven to nine percent of writers make at least $100 each month on Medium. I did it in my first month. Here is what I did each week to achieve my goal, hopefully, you can use my journey to $100 a month to achieve yours.
