Where to Begin?

A poem about finding strength to begin a vulnerable conversation in a wounded relationship.

Photograph by Christopher Madsen

Where do we begin?

When our boundaries are rough.

Time in between quite as sin.

Where do we start?

When silence is hard.

Our walls have gone up unable to talk.

Where do we go?

When our words can not show.

This pain in our heart festering seed to grow.

What do we do?

When we are stuck in our chest to no longer caress.

I begin to speak from my pain.

You explain hope in your heart.

I listen to a lifetime of shame in regret.

I witness release as rain wets your cheeks.

Return opening a closed heart, I embrace.

You release doubt as energy flows.

In darkness strengthening love grows.

Shelter for our healing wounds.

Lover we are bound inside empathy’s room.
