Where Ladies Of A Certain Age Shine

Older ladies are NOT invisible in Palm Springs

They walk among us.

They are not invisible.

Many a middle-aged or senior woman elsewhere will inform you of this frightening phenomenon — they’ve become invisible overnight, a non-person, nothing of substance. Something in the way, blocking the view.

But here in Palm Springs, California, we’ve discovered a rare breed.

And no, I’m not talking about the overly-Botoxed, looking-like-a-cat kind of lady. Sure, they’re here too, those trophy wives showing a bit too much tarnish.

But come walk with me and see thriving ladies in their natural habitat.

Earlier this month, my partner Eddie and I decided to check out the monthly Palm Springs Vintage Market for last-minute Christmas ideas. In a parking lot, it’s like a swap meet or extended yard sale with a heightened focus on mid-century modern.

We were dressed appropriately for comfort, I in my shorts and hoodie, Eddie in his sun cap and layers for warmth.

But apparently we missed the memo, for at least 50 percent of the ladies there were decked out — some, for sure, to impress, and others just because they enjoy an occasion to shine, to feel creative and wonderful.

Were we all in a parking lot looking at junk?

You bet.

Yet, the parade of self-confidence was hard to ignore.

While Palm Springs is known for its art scene and its growing gay community, there’s also no denying that ladies of a certain age are here to continue to live and be seen, with a vengeance.

Sometimes with mixed results.

I’ll be honest, in earlier life I sometimes had an issue with fashionistas who wasted so much money (or so I perceived) to make a splash, to only turn heads and get attention, get noticed. It just seemed so self-conscious.

But these ladies here are teaching me it’s not about that. It’s about dressing to impress yourself, and dressing to feel creative and alive. And to get the occasional you’re so fabulous! comment from a gay guy.

Hey, if the straight guys have stopped paying attention, may as well get the validation where it’s at!

You can find them at art exhibits, theater galas, at volunteer opportunities and civic events.

Don’t worry, the ladies are doing all right.
