Where is Your Box? Do You Have a Box?

Neither Inside Nor Outside. By the Author.

Welcome to part four of The Box. To be less confused, start here if you haven’t already. Part One. Part Two. Part Three.

ACQ lay in the middle of the kitchen floor. He was out cold.

The box chuckled.

“That was unusual and unexpected. Getting him to trip on the chair, hit his head on the counter, and knock himself out. I should have mentioned that, once he loses consciousness, when he comes around, your powers will be gone.

And with that, our adventure is coming to an end.”

“An end? I was just getting into the swing of things.”

“With ACQ knocked out, when the delivery driver comes, you’ll need to answer the door and hand me over. Obviously, you can’t be in when that happens.”

“Why can’t we just leave?”

“I’ve been trying to infiltrate Amajon for years. I’m not giving up the chance. Across the road, down the street, there’s a bus. It will get you home.”

The bus pulled up. Every passenger had a box next to them. The driver looked me in the eye.

“Where is your box? Do you have a box?”

“A box? It’s gone… to infiltrate Amajon?”

All the passengers stood while their boxes let out a round of applause. The applause subsided and the passengers sat.

“Ticket? Where are we going?”

I heard laughter when I said “ticket.” The driver pointed at the sign. The sign said “THERE.”

The driver motioned towards the front seat. “Just sit down.”

Once I was seated, everyone on the bus moved as far towards the back of the bus as they could.

Soon, I dozed off. I was awoken by the driver.

“We’re almost there!”

I looked around and all the passengers had changed. None of these passengers had boxes.

I got off and the drunk was still sitting by the bus stop.

“You were right. There wasn’t there.”

“Yeah, sure. Can you get me a sandwich?”

There was a deli across the road.

I walked up to the counter and the server handed me a sandwich.

“I haven’t ordered yet?”

“It’s for him, isn’t it? One of these, too.”

Something in a small box.

I got outside and handed them over.

First, he ate the box, then started tearing up the sandwich. Soon, he was surrounded by gulls baying for a scrap. Once the sandwich was finished, the gulls picked him up and flew him away. He turned.

“See you at the next bus stop!”

I felt that time had been messed with, and despite all the sleeping, I was very tired.

I shuffled home and got into bed. Just as I was about to fall asleep my phone lit up with a message from an unrecognised number.

“I’m in.”
