PROCRASTINATION STATION
When You Give a Writer a Blank Page
You can predict how her day will turn out
When you give a writer a blank page,
She’s gonna want a coffee to go with it.
When she goes to get her coffee,
She will dig around the cupboard for some sugar.
When she stirs in the sugar,
She’s going to need a place to put her spoon.
When she opens the dishwasher,
She will see it full of clean dishes.
When she starts to put away the dishes,
She’s gonna notice the counter needs wiping.
As she’s wiping the counter,
She’ll decide to listen to an audiobook while she works.
When she finds her phone,
She’ll want to check her email.
When she opens the phone,
She will notice the time and decide to make lunch.
She will open a box of mac and cheese,
And choose to have a glass of milk to go with it.
When she opens the fridge to get the milk,
She will decide, instead, to have orange juice.
When she smells the orange juice,
She’ll notice it’s bad and place it on the counter to empty.
That’s when she’ll notice dirty dishes still in the sink.
She’ll go to put them in the dishwasher and realize it is still clean and full.
While she’s trying to figure out whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher,
She’s gonna get an idea that needs to be written down before she forgets it.
She’ll get out the blank paper.
Then she’ll want a coffee to go with it.
The format for this piece is based on the children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff.
