Spiritual Development

When We Fall Off the Spiritual Wagon

Is it possible and what to do about it

Has this ever happened to you? You are going along the spiritual path, things are pretty good. In fact, they are so good you don’t meditate for a day, maybe two, or more. You have this stuff down, you’ve been doing it for years.

Then things fall apart.

It’s when we get busy, complacent, or bored and stop doing our practice that things can unravel rather quickly.

Can we fall off the spiritual wagon?

Is it really that precarious? After all the effort? All the seminars, books, courses, readings…yes it is. I know because I have done it more times than I care to admit.

Let’s put this into a different perspective.

It took us a long time to create the patterns we have. Those patterns are set by our beliefs, and those beliefs are set by our habitual thoughts and feelings.

So, if we change our perspective (focus) from the old and unhelpful to the new and healthy, things change. If we fall off the spiritual wagon, we are focusing on the old, and the longer we do it the more we fall.

How to get back on the path

I like to think of it in terms of sports. If you are an athlete you need to be in the zone. When you aren’t, if you look at life through a lens of doubt or fear, you are going to slump.

We all need to get into our zone. The spiritual path is a fantastic way to find it. So is music, sports, dancing, writing, or nature.

Do what you love, do it often. Meditate in your own way, practice in a way that is effective for you. Focus on thoughts that move you forward, not thoughts that keep you stuck.

It’s okay to fall, you can get back up again. You truly can do anything you set your mind to.
