Summary

Cameron's solitary quest for a profound connection with the universe is interrupted by his friend Steve, who encourages him to embrace adventure and live life to the fullest.

Abstract

In a serene meadow, Cameron seeks a deep, spiritual connection with the universe, hoping to transcend mundane thoughts. His contemplation is disrupted by the arrival of his friend Steve, who challenges Cameron's introspective approach to life. Steve argues for seizing the day and engaging in physical activities like hiking or horseback riding, suggesting that life should be lived adventurously rather than spent in quiet reflection. Despite initial resistance, Cameron is persuaded to join Steve on an adventure, indicating a shift in perspective influenced by their interaction. The narrative concludes with a nod to Groundhog Day, reinforcing the theme of embracing the present moment and the joy of outdoor activities.

Opinions

  • Cameron values deep, spiritual experiences and believes in the power of connecting with nature.
  • Steve represents a more pragmatic and action-oriented philosophy, advocating for active engagement with life.
  • Steve views the connection with the universe as something to be experienced after death rather than during life.
  • Cameron appears to be somewhat influenced by Steve's perspective, as he decides to join him on a horse ride to the caldera.
  • The author seems to suggest that both contemplation and adventure have their place in living a full life.
  • The mention of Groundhog Day and the call to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather implies that the author endorses taking advantage of spontaneous opportunities for joy and celebration.

When the Universe Interrupts

It’s time for adventure

Random thoughts ping ponged through his noggin. He was trying to get them to stop as he sat on a fallen log at the edge of the meadow. He wanted to replace the thoughts with something profoundly more powerful.

He wanted to feel the energy of creation; the force behind all things. He wanted to be subsumed by it. Surrendering to it was what he wanted more than everything.

“Hey douche bag.”

Cameron turned on the log to look behind him. His friend Steve was headed towards him. So much for a quiet meditation in the meadow.

“I thought I’d find you out here. Communing with nature are you?” Steve sat down on the log next to Cameron.

“Yeah, something like that. It’s a beautiful day. Why be indoors?”

“Well, I agree with you. That’s why I’m out here. I’m in the mood for some hiking or mountain climbing or kayaking or fishing or horseback riding or dirt biking. What do you say? Or do you just wanna be all by yourself connecting to the Universe?”

“That was my intention.”

“Listen Cameron, I figure I’ll connect with the Universe when I kick the bucket. So why bother doing it until then? Life is for living. Ya gotta grab it by the balls. Live it fully. Dude, what’s life without adventure?”

Cameron slapped the palm of his hand against his forehead. He was not in the mood for philosophical discourse.

“Think of me as a messenger sent by the Universe to tell you to get up off your ass and do something.”

Again Cameron slapped his forehead. After a brief moment of silence he turned to Steve, “It’s been a while since I’ve been on a horse.”

“Now you’re talking. We can rent some horses and ride up to the caldera. Hey, I’ll call Pamela to see if she wants to come. Maybe I can get her to pack a picnic.” Steve pulled his phone out of his pocket.

As Steve talked to Pamela, Cameron looked out over the peaceful meadow. It would still be there later. The Universe obviously had different plans for him today.

Happy Groundhog Day…

Author’s note: Today, on Groundhog Day, we are having unseasonably warm weather. It’s supposed to get up into the 70s (Fahrenheit). We all know what that means, right? Picnic! It’s time to shut it down and go outside.
