Summary

A bird-watcher captures a humorous interaction between two robins fighting over a branch in a serene winter setting.

Abstract

While engaging in bird-watching as the winter sun set, the author witnessed an amusing territorial dispute between two robins. One robin persistently attempted to land on a branch, only to be repeatedly rebuffed by the other robin who would spread its wings to prevent the landing. The author managed to photograph the moment the robin was forced to take flight again, reflecting on the shared human and avian trait of occasional possessiveness. Despite the challenge, the author remains determined to capture a peaceful moment of the robins sharing the branch in the future.

Opinions

  • The author finds humor in the robins' behavior, likening it to a toddler's tantrum.
  • There is a sense of admiration for the robins' determination, as the author relates to their persistence.
  • The author appreciates the beauty of the natural setting, as evidenced by the description of the sunset and the environment.
  • The author acknowledges that sometimes creatures, including humans, are not inclined to share, drawing a parallel between human and bird behavior.

When The Robins Are Acting Like Toddlers

It was a day a few years ago when I was standing outside bird-watching. The sun was setting, the cold was beginning to seep into my jacket, and the winter sky was painted in lavender hues. As I stood motionless so as to not upset the robins, the sun’s lowering began to cast shadows on the trees. I didn’t know if my camera could pick up these two robins.

There was a situation going on between these robins. I had been mesmerized by them for a while. It was becoming comical, and I had to photograph the scene.

The robin that’s currently in the air could not make a landing on that branch. He kept on trying, but the other robin was not having it. Every time the robin in flight would land, the other robin would hop over and throw up his wings at the other. This went on for a bit.

Luckily, I captured the robin retaking flight after being driven off the branch. As the melody of chirping and peeping faded from the robin who had flown away, I laughed and thought:

“Not everyone is in the mood to share! Even the birds.”

There would be other days to photograph these two robins sharing a branch. Because just like the robin, I will be determined to get my way and snap them together!
