When Sorrows Come, This Too Shall Pass: A Letter of Stoic Hope in Dark Times — Letter 57
My ongoing project to translate all of Seneca’s letters into modern English.
My dear friend,
I have heard of the sorrow that has recently enveloped your days. My heart grieves to know you are walking in such darkness. I wish I could carry some of the weight for you.
But know that this intense pain, too, shall pass. Such times of trouble arise for us all. Yet the sun always emerges again from behind the clouds. Winter’s bitter chill transforms into the warm relief of spring. This is the nature of life — and of the resilience within you.
Call to mind the many trials you have already navigated. You have journeyed through storms before, and found your way back to safer harbors. You have unmatched strength within, even when clouds obscure it. You will remember this in time.
When anguish surrounds us, we see only the negative — but there is still light to be found. Commit to noticing small joys — laughter with friends, sunlight on your face, simple comforts that sustain. Acknowledge beauty where you can, though it may seem meager.
Extend compassion towards yourself, as towards a weary friend. There is no shame in struggling, only in letting it harden your heart. Accept fully where you stand today, so you can take the next step when you are ready.
While the path feels unclear, stay grounded in caring community. You do not walk alone — many who went before you mapped this landscape. In time, you can lend wisdom to another. New growth often sprouts after forests burn and dear things are lost.
The way ahead will gradually open before you. I remain by your side through this passage. When sorrow comes with heavy hands, recall that even this burden shall pass. Until then, we endure. Take refuge and be gentle, dear friend.
