When Little Things Bother Us In a Big Way

Don’t let them-remember this too shall pass.

Are you one of those people who let little things bother you? Do you strive so hard for perfection that some small disturbance upsets you and throws you into a tizzy? It’s not worth it, just let it be. Nobody is perfect.

Some people labor long, hard, and lovingly on the absolutely memorable Thanksgiving dinner, only to freak out if the gravy gets a little scorched or a child spills a glass of milk on their beautifully-decorated tablecloth.

Relax and go with the flow, because it’s just not worth it. Accidents happen, and they can happen to the best of us at the most inconvenient times.

We can learn a lot of valuable life lessons from how we react to these unpredictable and out of our control situations when they crop up.

  1. We can learn the virtue of patience, and how every little unplanned thing that pops up is not necessarily an emergency code red, a recipe for disaster. Live and let live.
  2. We might remind ourselves of the lesson of humility. The world does not revolve around us or our plans no matter how beautifully detailed, well thought out, and perfect they may be. Que sera, sera.
  3. We may remember the lessons of experience and absorb the value of improvisation and put them to use. A stitch in time saves nine.
  4. We could strive to regain our sense of perspective. Things that matter so very much to us do not necessarily affect others the same way. To each his own.
  5. We might try to realize and accept that sometimes, things just happen without any obvious reason. Everything is not set in stone. Nobody is perfect.

We are all imperfect beings living in a topsy-turvy, upside-down, scrambled, and often fragmented world.

There is nothing wrong with this. It is just the way it is. All we can do is show the grace and wisdom to realize and accept this ancient home truth.

Stuff happens.

Sometimes, plans are made to be broken, dishes are destined to be spilled, and even healthy relationships may fail. Yet the world still turns.

Bad things can happen to good people, and anything can happen to anybody at any time. Life goes on.

We need to acknowledge, to realize, that while striving for perfection is a good thing, not achieving it is not the end of the world as we know it.

A sense of humor, a tolerance for others’ mistakes, and a live-and-let-live attitude, is a better, more realistic way of life. The constant seeking for perfection is not that important.

Often it is an unattainable illusion, a wispy cloud of hope and light or an opaque wall of smoke driven by the wind, an ideal to strive for, but it is not the only way to think.

Nobody is perfect. Concentrate on living in the moment, be mindful of the little things, and celebrate the joy of being.

Life is a series of moments. Enjoy them as they come. We are all connected…
