When Life Gives You Lemons, You Make Lemonade. When Life Gives You Limes, What Do You Do?

Here’s what I did with my limes

Acrylic painting by author

When life gives you limes, what do you do? According to Google, you can:

  1. Make margaritas. — Jimmy Buffett
  2. Rearrange the letters to form the word SMILE. — Unknown

My family grew many fruits, vegetables, and other produce. I remember the lime tree outside our house, and on scorching days, instead of making lemonade, we made limeade. We added banana essence. It was incredibly delicious!

I’m not here to tell you what you should do with your limes. If you’re still wondering what you can do, you can use them as the subject of your paintings. I painted the lime shown above using acrylic paint.

It is important to note that you must paint multiple layers before achieving the desired result. When you begin, pay attention to the location of your dark and light shades. Placing your dark tones and light tones in the right places will assist as you add each subsequent layer.

There are instances when the piece will appear ugly. These are the moments when you need to push past the voices that tell you that you have failed, and keep going. Trust the process. Keep adding those layers. Watch it transform before your eyes.

The last stages include adding fine details. The difference between adding these details or not is what makes the final product look real. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. You are the artist and in control.

Happy Painting!
