When Life Gave Me The Answer

Reading Life Know The Answer by Annelise Lords, my memory went on a journey. This incident happened to my youngest child, a few years ago.

When my youngest was in the last year of high school we visited a church Thrift Store to support their fundraiser. She bought a small brand-name handbag with the attached price tag of $4.00 which made her smile. She handed the cashier a $20 bill and received her change, putting it away. After browsing around for another thirty minutes we left without buying anything else.

We headed to the Target store as she wanted to get other stuff. At the cashier, the items she bought totaled over $13.80. She took out her money to pay, and I caught a disappointed look on her face as she stared up at me with a sad look.

“What is it?” I asked. “I should have gotten back more than this from that lady at the Thrift shop,” she complains. I eased closer and took her purse. There was only $7.68 in it. I asked, “how much did you paid for the bag?” She handed me her receipt. It said $4.32 and the change was $15.68 and there was a $0.32 tax.

“You didn’t check your change before you leave?” I asked. “I didn’t know that I had to,” Nayla said. “She only gave me $7.00.” “Are you sure honey?” I asked in confusion. “Yes mom,” she said, then went on to explain close to tears.

“I carried $20.00 and I knew I wasn’t going to buy a lot of things there. What I bought from her came to $4.32. I should have gotten back 15.68. I got $7.68 cents. She overcharged me $8.00.”

A mother’s heart felt her child’s pain. “You want to go back?” I asked.

“No mum,” she said in sadness. “I should have checked my change.” Sighing heavily, I encouraged, “Baby, you know what, don’t worry about it. Sometimes people do make mistakes. It can be an honest mistake. Trust God, you lose a few dollars. God will provide double the amount you lose.”

I watched a smile slowly cover the cloud of disappointment and we moved on.

A few weeks after summer break she got a job at a school to help the janitorial staff clean the school. When she was asked if she would do it, I thought she would refuse, but my humble beautiful, and God-fearing child accepted the job with humility.

She worked from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. for five days. One evening when I went to pick her up, there was a bright smile on her face. That smile was as bright as the sun. That day seeing that smile nothing the enemy device could destroy my peace, after seeing that light radiating from my child.

She got into the car and I teased, “I can see the sunlight radiating from miles away. Why is the sun shining so brightly now?”

She giggled, then shared, “Mum, do you remember when that lady short-changed me, and you told me to let it go and that the Lord would multiply it and send it back double?”

“Y-e-s,” I dragged my letters, as she fastened her seatbelt. “Today I was cleaning out drawers and lockers and I found a gift card. I took it to the supervisor who said, ‘It’s yours. Don’t worry.’ Mom,” she said happily. It’s valued at $50.00. What you said came right back at me. I could not believe it.”

“Believe it daughter, God has a way to give us back what was taken from us.” Life definitely knows the answer!
