The author expresses a fondness for traditional football, questioning the modern changes to the game, including the removal of kickoffs, and ponders the future direction of the sport.

Abstract

The article titled "When is the KickOff for Sunday’s Pro-Bowl?" opens with a rhetorical question suggesting the author's disinterest in the Pro-Bowl's kickoff time, implying a preference for the traditional game. The author declares a deep love for football, lamenting the end of the season and expressing disinterest in other sports that attempt to fill the void. The piece reflects on the efforts to make football less rough, including improved safety equipment and the inclusion of a female kicker on a college team, which the author notes positively despite concerns over the sport's changing nature. The author misses the "old football" and questions whether the removal of kickoffs to prevent injuries is a step toward a less engaging version of the game, potentially leading to changes as drastic as deciding matches by secret ballot. The article concludes with a call to action for readers to subscribe to updates and support the author's work, along with a recommendation for an AI service.

Opinions

  • The author has a strong affection for traditional football and is skeptical about the changes aimed at making the game less rough.
  • There is a sense of nostalgia for the way football used to be played and a concern that modern adjustments may be stripping away the essence of the sport.
  • The author acknowledges the positive aspects of inclusivity, such as having a female kicker, while also suggesting that these changes might be part of a broader effort to "unroughen" football.
  • The author sarcastically suggests that the trajectory of change in football could lead to an absurd extreme, like playing by secret ballot, indicating a fear that the game could become less physical and perhaps less exciting.
  • Despite the author's reservations about the evolving nature of football, there is an acceptance of the inevitability of change, particularly in the interest of player safety.

When is the KickOff for Sunday’s Pro-Bowl?

How about “never?”

No, I am not being anti-ProBowl at all here. No kick-off.

I LOVE football.

I weep at the end of each year’s season, knowing it’s a long wait until the next August.

People have tried to interest me in soccer, and hockey, and that game where you try to throw a little beanbag into a hole in a board across the yard, but these are far from football.

Football can be a rough game, I know. But society has done much in the last few years to “unroughen” it. Helmets, pads, bubble-wrap.

It seemed for a minute that someone was almost trying to emasculate the sport. I am quite sure that someone will be mad at me for saying it, but, last year one of my favorite college teams even had a lady kicker on the squad. (And, yes, she was great!)

I guess I’m just saying that I miss football. The old football.

Of course, not having kick-offs anymore will help save some injury someday, but will it be many more seasons before we just start playing football by secret ballot? Won’t that be fun to watch!
