When I was a kid, I went to Brownies…

It was a popular extra-curricular weekly activity for girls to attend to meet friends, learn basic life skills and earn badges in the process.
Founded in the early 1900s by the Scouting leader, Lord Baden Powell, the Girl Guide movement was designed to ‘be a catalyst for girls empowering girls.’
The Brownie motto was to ‘lend a hand’. I can even remember the Brownie promise that we had to recite at every meeting:
I promise to do my best; to do my duty to God and the Queen To help each other every day, especially those at home
They’ve since changed the wording.
My strongest memories are creating a garden using mum’s baking tray and selling their biscuits door-to-door each year.
The uniform was a gross brown colour, but I wore it proudly none-the-less.
