When Bedtime Stories and Board Meetings Collide
The Adventures of a Super Mom and Her Dynamic Duo

As the sun peeks through my curtains, heralding the start of another weekday, my alarm clock performs its daily ritual of jolting me into reality.
The previous evening, while meticulously planning the next day (a habit picked up from countless project timelines), I had blissfully overlooked one small detail — today was ‘Bring Your Favourite Storybook Character to School’ day. My living room, usually a sanctuary of calm amidst the chaos, had been transformed overnight into a scene straight out of a storybook, with my two young co-conspirators deeply immersed in a fortress of pillows, blankets, and an array of toys that would make Santa’s workshop look understocked.
As I stepped into the morning light, my daughter, the spirited leader of the duo, greeted me with her trademark grin and a request that would send shivers down the spine of any parent with a packed schedule: “Mom, can I go to school as a princess dragon today?” The combination itself wasn’t as alarming as the realisation that I had exactly one hour to transform my sweet, pyjama-clad kiddo into a mythical, fire-breathing royal.
Sprinting through the house, I gathered supplies for our impromptu costume-making session. My son, the quieter but equally imaginative half of the duo, decided he wanted to join in as a knight — but not just any knight, a robot knight. Because, why not?
Armed with cardboard, tin foil, and an assortment of markers, we embarked on our frantic yet strangely exhilarating crafting journey. As I fashioned a dragon tail and robot armour, I couldn’t help but marvel at the creativity of my little ones. Their ability to dream up such vivid characters was a reminder of the magic that exists in everyday moments, even those that start with a forgotten school event and a race against the clock.
With costumes complete and a quick, somewhat nutritious breakfast devoured, we set off on our quest to school. The car ride was filled with laughter and rehearsals of roars and robotic beeps.
At school drop-off, I watched my princess dragon and robot knight join their band of storybook friends. The pride in their steps and the joy in their laughter were my rewards, far outweighing the chaos of the morning.
Returning home, the silence was a stark contrast to the morning’s escapades. I looked around at the remnants of our crafting battle — scattered pieces of cardboard, a trail of glitter, and a half-drunk cup of coffee (a necessary accessory for any super mom). It was time to switch gears, to step into the world of deadlines, emails, and all the responsibilities that come with being an adult.
But even as I immersed myself in work, my mind often wandered back to the morning’s adventures. I thought about how, in the eyes of my kids, I was more than just a mom; I was a costume designer, a storyteller, a playmate. It’s a role I cherish, even amidst the balancing act of single parenthood and a career.
As the workday wound down, I prepared for the evening’s routine — dinner, baths, bedtime stories. But tonight, inspired by the day’s events, I decided to switch things up. Instead of reading from a book, we created our own story. My children, still buzzing from their day as storybook heroes, eagerly contributed ideas, crafting a tale of epic adventures and fantastical creatures.
Lying there, with one child nestled under each arm, I reflected on how it is these moments that are my truest successes. Sure, I could lead a meeting and meet tight deadlines, but creating a world of wonder for my two greatest achievements, watching their imaginations soar — that was where my heart truly lay.
It was more than just surviving the chaos to; it was about finding joy in the unexpected, embracing the mess, and celebrating the small victories. It was a reminder that even in a world that often demands perfection, there’s beauty in imperfection, laughter in the chaos, and an endless supply of love in every shared adventure.
As I finally sat down, my living room now resembling a somewhat normal space, I couldn’t help but smile. Tomorrow would bring its own set of challenges and triumphs, but for tonight, I basked in the glow of today’s victories — both at work and at home.
In this adventure of single motherhood and career, I don’t always have all the answers. But one thing is certain: in the eyes of my two little ones, I’m more than enough. I’m their mom, their hero, their storyteller — and in our story, that’s all that really matters.
