We’ve all been there. We’ve experienced that crushing sense of discouragement that seems to come out of nowhere and knocks us down. Life feels like one big struggle, and we can’t see any hope for the future.

As one who knows what it means to feel dismayed, afraid, and without hope, I also know that there’s a tiny, beckoning spark that appears in the middle of night’s darkest hours. At first, it may seem like the smallest of flickers, but the heart-beat of hope is being reborn. You’re still alive, and you will thrive.

My own midnight gave birth to the following reality:

Like fading light And graying sky My hopes escape My thoughts: “Why try?”

Escaping air Like old balloons Deflating hopes The darkness looms.

I turn my gaze I lift my eyes There’s something there A spark of light.

A feeling strange Attracting me It feels like joy And memories free.

As I gaze My thoughts are drawn Magnetic pull To days of dawn.

The stirring grows The Light expands Now filling me With hope-filled lands.

He’s always there In all my pain Through the night Through the rain.

His love is real He’ll never leave Embracing me He heals my grief!

There are times When hope feels lost Joy departs A tearful cost.

May truth arise And touch our pain! May hope returning Fresh joy regained!

Desmund Tutu, one of South Africa’s most well-known and courageous human rights activists is quoted as saying, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”

The future is as bright as the character and quality of God’s Spirit. Have growing confidence in that!
