When All You Can See is the Pain

A Poem

Photo by soheyl dehghani on Unsplash

Sometimes when I look at a rainbow I can’t appreciate its beauty because I am preoccupied with climbing on top of it and falling off, breaking all my bones

It’s not that the rainbow’s not pretty It’s just that I don’t think I deserve it and I would rather wallow in the pain than think about how beautiful life is, represented by this rainbow, when that beauty is for other people, not for me

When all you can see is the pain you will miss a lot, even when it’s right in front of you staring you in the face You will look over happiness’ shoulder and into the deep cauldron of despair that keeps you warm at night

You will miss a row of flowers while you focus on cracked pavement because those cracks are what match you You will miss a smile from a stranger while you focus on the person behind them who you think is judging you for wearing that jacket on a day like today And it’s not really them, they aren’t even paying attention to what you are doing It’s you, it’s me, we are full of pain

When all you can see is the pain you’re basically blind, sightless even though you can actually see but that’s the problem because you aren’t seeing the real world settling right in front of you, begging you to notice it All you can see is your own thoughtless and overpowering, heart-wrenching and debilitating, mysteriously beautiful pain
