When a Collection Connects the Love of the Past to the Now

November Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “3”

“Hoo, Hooo, Hoooo, ” says the owls.

As the seasons change, I put out different decorations on my dining room table. The table is nearly 100 years old, given to my grandparents when they married in the 1920s.

My mother told me how she would play under the table as a little girl. I don’t remember playing under the table, but my boys spent a lot of time playing with their cars under it when they were little.

Every fall, I put out some of my owls. One of my aunts collected owls. They adorned every room in her house. My collection isn’t as extensive, just a small collection, but they make me smile as I think about the memories.

The two smaller owls are salt and pepper shakers. I inherited my grandmother’s salt and peppers when she passed and I’m carrying the tradition on. I got these owls from a vintage shop. They look just like the type of owls my aunt had in her kitchen.

My kids barely remember my mother and never met my owl-collecting aunt. I tell them the stories of the past in the hopes they will carry on the same when they have children of their own.

Do you have a collection? Tell me about in the comments.
