Life Lessons

What’s Your Story?

Are you telling or writing the right one?

“We see the world through lens of the stories we tell ourselves.” ~ Srinivas Rao

There is a seasoned Toastmaster at my club who is happy with his “dumb phone.” He likes to text, but otherwise not very tech-savvy. He has an email address that he uses, has been for years, but doesn’t have easy internet access.

When the Toastmasters International introduced their interactive curriculum, which requires internet access, he was ready to quit Toastmasters. I mean, he is a three-times DTM. Most Toastmasters don’t even make it once. It is the highest level of recognition bestowed by Toastmasters. He felt that he was done. He had nothing more to learn or teach because he can’t quickly get online — until someone reminded him what he always said.

“You’re never too old to learn something new.”

Suddenly, he realized that he was telling himself the wrong story. He signed up for the Pathways, the new online curriculum. He is excited that there is a paper version of it as well that he might use instead of the online version. Now he is ready to write a new story.

We are always writing our life”s story. It depends on which account we use as the basis to create our ultimate life story.

Is the story you tell yourself the right one to create the legacy you want to leave? Or are you Fooling yourself?
