Summary

The article reflects on the fleeting nature of trends, likening them to the growth and decay of a tomato plant.

Abstract

The piece uses the metaphor of a ripe tomato to discuss the cyclical nature of trends. It suggests that trends, much like a tomato ready to be picked, are often in plain sight but only recognized when the time is right. The poem highlights the transient popularity of fads, which are celebrated one day and forgotten the next, as they make way for new trends. It touches on the idea that every moment has its own trend, which rises to prominence only to fade away, similar to the seasons of growth and decay in nature.

Opinions

  • The author views trends as ephemeral, gaining and losing popularity quickly.
  • There is a sense of irony in how trends are 'invisible until the moment made it right,' suggesting that recognition comes suddenly and often arbitrarily.
  • The poem conveys a philosophical stance on the nature of trends, comparing them to natural cycles of life and death, or in this case, relevance and obscurity.
  • The author implies that the pursuit of trends is a Sisyphean task, as today's trend is tomorrow's forgotten fad.
  • By using biblical references like 'Scripture says there is a time,' the author infers a divine or predestined aspect to the lifecycle of trends.

What’s Trending?

A poem on the elusive tomato

Photo by Dani California on Unsplash

Like a ripe tomato, heavy with promise

a new fad waits to be plucked.

It was always there in plain sight,

yet invisible until the moment made it right.

What’s hot is hot on this day:

Shouted from the rooftops

Swallowed by the sea

Paraded around town in victory.

Scripture says there is a time,

a time for love, hate, remorse,

and resurrection.

Today may be the day of reckoning

when your trending trellis wilts.

By tomorrow a fad is ground into oblivion

Spread like fertilizer to make way for

new sprouts that will be trending,

Like ripe tomatoes, heavy with promise.
