What’s The Purpose of Learning Languages
Learning a new language is good for your life and health as well.
I Love learning new languages. My mother language is Dutch. I have been taught English in high school (my favorite language), and German. Both — English and German — are far from perfect in my case, as well as my mother language Dutch.
Since I’m writing in English, my English had been improved a lot. I still make mistakes. Learning several other languages is fun too. You can be intelligible in another language. That makes it special. A little bit mysterious.
There are so many apps out there to learn a new language. I am learning through the app Duolingo. I am not learning through books. I hate to sit and dig into the books and learning, but on the other hand, I love it too.
I prefer to be alone. So, I decided to try out an app. Duolingo came on my mind in the first place as I had installed it already. I knew I have to do it every day.
Almost every day I learn German, and once or twice a week, I’m heading to the English tab to learn English. I have about ten languages I learn, but it is impossible to learn every day, so I try to do each language once a week. I’m kind of a language freak, I guess.
The purpose of learning new languages is getting you to be understood in what you want or what you try to say. Isn’t it lovely to talk German with your German neighbors? Or your Swedish friend? Or when you read the Turkish newspaper? But there is more.
Your brain grows
Another thing about learning new languages is expanding your brain. Your brain will grow. The more you practice the new language, the more you will remember and the bigger your brain will be. So, I tried it when I learned with Duolingo the language of German.
The results? I have been more productive while writing articles and stories.
You can concentrate much more
When I read stories in other languages, for example, English, I need to concentrate on what the story or book tells me. So, in this way, I expand my concentration. It tells my brain to stay longer and focus more on my task.
You teach your brain to do one thing for a longer time.
Easier to learn another language
When you have learned one language, you are able to learn other languages too. And also you can learn other languages faster. You have a wider brain, and you can associate words from another language.
I love learning other languages and knowing that I could learn other languages faster, makes me want to learn more languages.
Helps when traveling
When I learned my German course, I have a little basic in German. On my holidays through Germany this summer, I could speak a little bit when I went into a restaurant to drink with my family.
The employees of the restaurant could understand me a little bit.
You become more creative
I have recognized that I became more creative in writing in English instead of my mother language. I am also more creative in my mother language.
That means writing just a personal letter to my sister in Dutch, but with more creativity in how I use my language. Different sentences, longer and shorter sentences are alternated.
Self-confidence is all around you
I don’t know about you, but when I learn a new language, I have more confidence in the tasks I am doing. Like writing in English. I say to myself: “Agnes, you really can write in English”.
It also makes me proud that I have learned another language.
Appreciation for other culture
The last thing I want to say is that you will appreciate other cultures more and also, you will understand them too. I love learning also other cultures. Maybe they have habits I don’t have, but I can implement in my own life.
