What’s In An Image?

Concrete and steel. Cold, dark, and stark.

This remote place of incarceration offered a glimpse into prison life under some of the most extreme conditions of its time.

There was no way out, other than finishing your sentence, attempting escape, or death.

Walking the hallways where the worst of the worst roamed was a chilling experience. Not sure if the chill in the air was from the lack of heat or the remnants of the cold, uncaring criminals who served their time there.

No idea what went on in some of these spaces, but none of it looked good. Lots of questions begging to be answered.

This is your room for life. A very sobering thought that your existence could be limited by this small block of concrete and steel. The reality of that life defies comprehension when you sit in front of your warm fireplace as I am at the moment.

Broken lives on both sides of the walls. Never to be healed, never to be put back together.

Some images in my photography collection are warm and fuzzy and some like these beg questions.

The answer to the question being begged in these images….

This is Alcatraz…

A humbling and eye-opening visit while on a trip to San Francisco a few years ago.

The tour of Alcatraz is well worth the time and expense. There are some remarkable stories told of those who spent time there.
