What’s In a Name?

Intro to Allisonn Church

Fellow writers, photographers, photobloggers, and people who like to look at stuff — hello! Thank you for welcoming me as an editor for In Living Color.

I wanted to introduce myself and thought it best to take a cue from JoAnn in terms of how to do it. So I decided to share a few photos that correspond to the letters in my first name. Here goes.

A is for Aunt

I love being an aunt and I write about it on here sometimes. I have four awesome nephews, but only two of them live nearby. The two local nephews often accompany my son and me on adventures, especially in the summer. The above photo shows an end-of-summer outing to our local bridge of flowers.

L is for Lady

It’s me! Did you all know about the Target Prairie Dress Challenge of 2021? It was silly, but a coworker begged me to participate since I keep chickens, so I obliged.

Anyway, I’m not necessarily what you might call a lady, but I use she/her pronouns and that seems like a useful thing to share.

L is for Leaves

I just adore leaves! And trees. And all things nature. And fall is my favorite season.

I is for Ice Cream

I also love ice cream, with or without toppings. It’s one of the things that’s gotten me through the pandemic. My son and I went to the local creamery so many times this summer, they memorized his regular order.

The first poem that I can remember writing as a kid was an ode to ice cream.

S is for Sketching

I also enjoy drawing and painting, although that’s not something I’ve written about on Medium so far. My grandfather was a painting instructor and he taught me all about light, shadow, and color-mixing.

Art does not have to be serious or highly aesthetic though — doodles are fun, too. I made a series of cartoon cat doodles to illustrate different cat habits and traits. Did you know that one reason they like to go in boxes is just to get away from us? Not a bad strategy for an introvert.

O is for Outdoors

We are an outdoorsy family. In fact, my son’s first word was “outside.” We love to hike, bike, and kayak. Some of my favorite features of the great outdoors are moss, ferns, and forest streams.

I take so many nature photos, it was hard to choose just one as a representative so, here’s a random goose.

N is for Notebook

This is my old guinea pig, Mocha, writing in her math notebook. Mocha was acting as a spokespig for the teacher preparation program where I work. We help people become licensed educators in our state through coursework and field experiences.

I guess n could also have been for “nonprofit,” since we are one of those, too.

N is for Nyctophobia

My mom spelled my name with an extra n and it’s kind of difficult sometimes (like right now when I’m struggling to think of another word that starts with n that I also have pictures of). A google search for “obscure words that start with n” led me to nyctophobia.

Yes, I am afraid of the dark. Lucky for me, I can usually find the moon.

Thank you all again for welcoming me here. I look forward to reading and sharing your countless fantastic photo stories. 💚
