What’s Happening on Medium? Why are Well-Known Writers Disappearing?
In the entire year I’ve been on Medium, I’ve never seen anything like this. Many accounts and writers I’ve known since I started on Medium have been canceled, with the corresponding error 410.
It’s not normal; legitimate accounts and people who always behave well and have authority here, with significant interaction within our community, are being affected.
I can understand that there are filters to separate people with good intentions from those who do not, but for an algorithm to determine which account is legitimate and which is not, it is not appropriate to make such drastic decisions as closing accounts. Artificial intelligence is a tool for us humans to use correctly.
But never, never, ever should it lead the way.
And it’s something that from some time ago until now we’re seeing more and more frequently, on all the platforms we use (I won’t name them, but we all know which ones).
And particularly here, the algorithm should not determine the proper functioning of this site.
Most of the people I know who have closed their accounts at this time are users and friends who contribute invaluable value to our community. I’m not even talking about the algorithm determining which article to elevate and which to leave in the shadows (I’m totally against it), and I speak from experience since I’ve promoted more than 20,000 articles.
And honestly, except for exceptions, many deserve much more recognition.
It’s not about complaining but rather showing the exasperating reality that many of our professional colleagues face at some point in their brilliant careers.
We are customers, users, writers, and readers, and above all, humans. I’m in favor of the algorithm but not in this way. We should always come first. Restore the accounts of people who have done nothing wrong, and above all, the algorithm should not close accounts automatically.
This is a failure and a reason for change, a change towards the right side of things. Where we humans decide the fate, and not just machines.
Should we even have to explain this?
