The NeverEnding Story’s connection to Marvel Comics

Sit down. Press play. And take a deep breath, because this cult classic movie has a stunning connection to Marvel comics and what I hope is the future of the MCU.

Stranger Things have happened than comic stans finally getting their due

You’ve heard the theme for The NeverEnding Story a million times. But did you know it was sung by French singer Limahl? And did you know he also recorded a version in French?

Is it just me, or does “NeverEnding Story” in French sound like “Sitting on a sooooooofaaaaaaaaaa…”

No coincidence, because I hope you’re sitting down. Limahl didn’t just sing the theme for this classic movie. His wild-ass hair inspired the look for what might be the most exciting Marvel comic book character yet to make their MCU debut.

Such flair, such style

In the early days of comic book movies, comic book characters looked like this.

You thinking what I’m thinking?

Yep. Not enough hair.

Just so, Limahl sported a hairstyle circa 1984 that served as the inspiration for the Marvel Comics X-Men character Longshot.

Speaking to Comic Book Artists/CBA, illustrator Arthur Adams explained that while many people thought Longshot was inspired by none other than Michael Jackson, the character was instead inspired by Limahl.

In the early days of MTV, Limahl appeared as the lead singer of a group called Kaja Googoo. Adams instantly recognized the hair as iconic. Why keep searching for what he’d already found?

Arthur Adams: I saw the lead singer and said, “Oh, that’s weird hair! I don’t see anyone in comics with that kind of hair, I can use that for Longshot!” I’m not sure where the rest of the costume was from, I was just trying to make it look different than other costumes that I was aware of.

Stranger things have happened than a NeverEnding Story revival

With NeverEnding Story on my mind, I couldn’t believe my dang ears when the English version of the title song popped up in Stranger Things Season 3. Dustin and Suzie killed it. Can we really accept anything from Season 5 if it doesn’t include another cover from them???

Thanks to the MCU expanding into the multiverse, I’m going to be just as adamant that the next phase of Disney+ shows includes one about Longshot escaping the MOJOverse.

Imagine if they used a Longshot series to give us our first glimpse of the X-Men.

But when they were X-Babies.

Or maybe when they were gender swapped.

Or maybe when they were trapped in the 1960’s by an amazing fan-made trailer.

The multiverse would allow the old versions to meet the new versions.

Sounds perfect! But only if the new show uses the theme to NeverEnding Story to introduce each episode.
