The Labrador Retriever Who Helped Police Bust the Subway Guy
For 15 years Jared Fogle served as the Subway spokesperson until his arrest
America is overweight. More than two-thirds of American adults are obese or overweight, that is according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
It is not surprising when people who are obese lose a hundred pounds they make the news. In 1999 Jared Fogle lost 245 lbs., he made the news, shortly thereafter became a Subway spokesperson and in 2015 was sentenced to 15 years in jail for soliciting sex with a minor and possession of child pornography.

Bear has been trained to detect out electronic items hidden from police in criminal situations, such as flash drives, tiny cameras, SD cards, cell phones, and laptops. He discovers a chemical known as TPPO, which is used in the production of electronic devices. I hope manufacturers of IoT will never stop using TPPO or Triphenylphosphine oxide.
The dog is just imprinted with that chemical and is capable of identifying it in any equipment that carries it as one dog trainer said in this interview.
The 2-year-old Labrador retriever helped find evidence at Fogle’s home in Zionsville, Indiana, when authorities raided the house. If not for Bear, Fogle would have continued preying on children, by the time of his arrest, there were 14 confirmed victims.
Fogle was asked by the judge to pay each of his victims $100,000 for the crimes he committed against them. A pittance considering Fogle made over $15,000,000 as the Subway Guy for 15 years.
To Subway’s credit, they disassociated with Fogle as soon as the investigation became public.
The Jared Tapes
It all started in 2007, Fogle paid for and planned his work trips around multiple sexual encounters with underage girls up until the summer of his arrest in 2015.
He also swapped photos and videos of naked children as young as six years old with Russell Taylor his partner in the Jared Foundation, a childhood-obesity charity. Records will later reveal that the foundation has never given any financial support to its programs in fighting childhood obesity, and most of its money went to paying Taylor as the foundation’s executive director.
Soon after his arrest, in August 2015, the former Subway Guy pled guilty to child pornography and sex crimes. What sealed his fate was — ‘Fogle was secretly videotaped by a lady who had befriended him but later became an FBI informant as part of the information gathered by investigators. ’
Plea Deal and Sentencing
During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt told the court, that Fogle was “obsessed” with pornography and having sex with minors. Judge Pratt ordered Fogle to serve 188 months in prison, or 15 and 1/2 years with the possibility of parole after serving 85% of his prison sentence.
In a brief statement to the court, Fogle said,
“I owe a huge apology to the people who supported me and my positive messages the last 15 years.” — Jared Fogle
A Canadian forensic psychiatrist Dr. John Bradford, who testified said that Fogle suffers from hypersexuality.
Bradford also said that Fogle has a compulsive drive — and that;
“When he lost weight it seemed that in a short period of time he developed compulsive sexuality,” -Dr. John Bradford
The psychiatrist also said that Fogle’s weight loss led him to develop mild pedophilia or weak pedophilia, a term Dr. Bradford coined himself and isn’t found in any medical journal.
The Subway Diet
His first step on the road to fame was a 1999 piece in the Indiana Daily Student about his amazing weight loss.
For a year Jared Fogle walked to the nearest Subway restaurant and ordered the same meals every day for one year. From eating as high as 10,000 calories a day, he was able to trim his calorie consumption to 2,000 with a 6-inch turkey sandwich for lunch and the 12-inch veggie sub for dinner without adding any oil, sauces, or cheese.
He shed more than 245 pounds in less than a year by eating solely Subway every day.
His weight loss journey was the stuff of legend. It reminds me of what Tim Ferriss’s said about losing fat, keeping the meal plan simple, to keep eating the same food over and over again.
It worked for Jared Fogle.
Subsequently, Fogle was featured in a Men’s Health magazine article, “Stupid Diets … that Work!”
Jared Fogle was so fat that he couldn’t fit through doorways. He couldn’t squeeze into car seats. And he chose college classes by testing classroom seats to see if could maneuver his 425-pound frame into them.
In spring of 1998, he walked into the Subway store in his apartment building and read their nutritional information. He decided, cold turkey, to cut his daily calorie consumption from 10,000 to 2,000.
His solution: a 6-inch turkey sub with no cheese, no mayo, veggies and spicy mustard along with a bag of Baked Lay’s for lunch (about 600 calories) and a veggie, foot-long sub and Baked Lay’s for dinner (about 800 calories). With each meal he’d have either a Diet Coke or bottled water. And virtually no snacking in between.
It turned out weight wasn’t Fogle’s biggest problem, but himself.

He added
“I try to avoid too much junk food. I snack on granola bars and protein bars. I feel really good physically and mentally.”
He is eligible for parole as early as March 24, 2029, and has to register as a sex offender.
Final words.
Jared Fogle the weight loss legend, a fitness hero, and a celebrity none of that matters now. He will always be remembered as a man of privilege, a man whose notoriety increased as his celebrity power grew. His sexual appetite didn’t happen because he lost 245 pounds, he craved children, and he use his money and power to feed his ‘hunger.’
Jared Fogle wasn’t a man who won his battle against obesity or weight, Jared Fogle is a man who lost his conscience and his soul.
As for Bear, commonly known as the porn-sniffing dog, the ‘strange dog’ was also involved in Olympic gymnastics coach Marvin Sharp’s case, which lead to his imprisonment. Sharp was discovered dead in his cell in 2015.
In 2018 ASPCA Humane Awards honored Bear together with remarkable animals in New York City.
