What Your Writing Reveals About You!
And you might not even realize it
One of the most fascinating aspects I have discovered here on Medium has been the vast diversity of topics and writers. As I read each one, I find myself learning a new skill, or an idea to consider, yet something else has recently become apparent.
No matter the topic, each writer reveals something about themselves in every article. Hidden within their story, or educational article, lies a unique handprint of their character, no matter how subtle it may seem.
Some are obvious, and almost seem to scream, ‘believe what I’m telling you despite having no proof.’ The voice of this writer assumes authority without merit, claiming a false superiority.
So what is this writer unknowlinly revealing about himself?
The essence of his or her words reveal desperation in craving approval. The assumption of knowledge is a facade from which to hide behind, too fearful to expose the truth. The truth being they hope the reader believes them, because there are no supporting factors.
This writer is not only manipulating your reality, but their own.
Another writer may write about growing old and the challenges they face. I sense their acceptance in the cycle of life, and their desire to share what we will all eventually face.
Their honesty and genuine voice remind us all of the passing of time. They hide their futility behind their words, yet I read it just the same. It is the very thing that perhaps caused them to write it in the first place, wanting to just be heard.
And than you have the distant writer, who writes at an arms length. They share nothing about themselves and maintain a formal voice. But what they hide is all too obvious, which is fear of revealing themselves. Why work so hard to be so distant, if it wasn’t so important?
Each sentence or even word we write reveals bits of who we are. From the writer like me, who eagerly shares my passions, to the distant writer who refrains, we all leave an imprint in our stories unique to us.
So maybe the next time you write an article, ask yourself, what does it reveal about you? Have you hidden yourself behind your words, or shared your story with sincerity and passion?
Are you trying to sound like someone else, preferring the illusion over authenticity? Or by omitting yourself you hope no one will notice the missing words that carry meaning?
Because you haven’t just written an article, but revealed much about yourself.
