What You Get Living On A Farm In The Midwest
That I appreciate every single day

A wise person who I used to work with gave me an eye-opening perspective. He helped me identify what makes a living situation unique.
Everyone that purposely moved somewhere is going after something unique about that location.
This was someone who used to live in the hustle and bustle of city life to the Midwest. He expressed how each area has a certain quality that people enjoy.
Living on the east or west coast or even the islands provides you with beaches and spectacular views.
The city provides you with all kinds of conveniences of close-by restaurants, entertainment, employment, and travel.
The mountains also have advantages over other living situations. You have many outdoor activities to choose from including skiing, biking, hiking, rafting or simply enjoying the secluded fresh ambiance that mountain air can bring.
Moving to the Midwest has something that you can appreciate that some people may not realize, and that is, space.
Space equals freedom
In my eyes, space equals freedom, the freedom to saddle up and roam freely on your horse without a care in the world. I suppose that is how many people felt in the early days of moving out west.
Having space allows the freedom to let our kids roam free without the worry of traffic or disturbing close neighbors. My favorite is to ride our bikes together up and down our driveway or dirt road that leads to our mailbox near the entrance of our property.
Having space has allowed our friends to set up camp and experience nature around them, including a complete universe of stars at night, followed by a pancake breakfast the next morning in our living room.
Having space allows you to feel safe and not worry nearly as much about locking doors. The stargazing on the trampoline is incredible. The location is far from the glow of the city, which allows the night sky to come to life.
In May and June, thousands of fireflies glow and flicker throughout all angles of the property.
Animals bring peace
Each of our animals has brought peace and joy in its own unique way. Our twenty-plus-year-old mule has a calm and gentle presence. Our sheep love a good visit. Their gentle demeanor has a calming effect on you.
The cats follow me around like dogs. The quiet summer ambiance is therapeutic and healing to the soul.
One of my favorite experiences is when I fill up the water container. Our miniature pony will come up for a drink right out of the nose. On a hot day, I will sprinkle water on him and then he will roll in the dirt to create natural sun protection.
What you also get living on a farm
In the summer, you must have your riding mower in good working order. The consequences of not mowing end you up in an almost amazon looking jungle. The grass will be all-consuming and suddenly your space will have been compromised.
The constant repair of lawn equipment and care for the animals When having to mow nearly four acres every week, your riding mower tends to need tightening up or occasional repair. The mowing and trimming require at least five hours of time each week.
All the animals need daily and regular rations of food and water.
You need to clear the snow and ice from your driveway or dirt road. Our friendly neighbors have assisted in this area with their ATVs and attached plows.
Occasional gravel for our dirt roads to prevent overgrowth of vegetation and weeds. This ensures a clear path in and out with transportation.
Constant and never-ending odds and ends of work around the property, weeding, gardening, trimming, chopping wood, and repairs.
The constant battle of insects. Behind our pond, we were running around in the pasture, and out of nowhere, we were being pursued by a wasp. Eventually, as I exhausted myself from running, the wasp tagged me in my ear! I learned shortly after that I was being pursued and stung by a bald-faced hornet, which is one of the most aggressive wasps you could encounter.
During the winter, when the tree branches were bare and visible, we found the giant bald-faced hornet’s nest tucked away, the size of a rugby football. No wonder we were having constant issues.
There are pros and cons to living in every situation. You just have to pick your battles or preferences and decide what is best for you and your family.
