Thought Experiment
What Would You Do With $100,000?
Is the tooth fairy still taking submissions?
The other day, I talked with a friend about feeling momentarily overwhelmed by life. I told her I didn’t know if the path I was currently on was the right one.
Then, after a pause, I said, “Oh wait, I know exactly what I want. I just need more money in the bank to make it happen!”
And from there, I began thinking about what I would do if I had 100,000 dollars dropped into my lap.
I would save, invest, rent an apartment, write, write, and write. Then, I would travel the world every few months before returning to my apartment. And donate as much as possible.
When I asked another friend what she would do with 100,000 dollars, she told me she would love to put some in a savings account and use the rest to start a business.
A different friend said she would love to travel and go home to see her family more. And yet another friend said he’d love to treat himself to a nice dessert every week and take more vacations.
This made me think of how everyone could be closer to their dream lives if they just had 100,000 extra dollars.
Why is it 100,000 dollars that I’m thinking about instead of a million or a billion dollars, you ask?
With a million or billion dollars, you could have a whole new life.
But 100,000 dollars doesn’t have as much buying power in today’s economy if you live in the U.S. That’s not enough to buy a house in most states. But depending on your expenses, it could undoubtedly cover your bills for a year or two.
That’s why 100,000 dollars is so interesting to think about. You may not be able to have a completely new life, but it could help you enhance your current life in many ways.
You could use it for long-term financial security or short-term pleasures. It isn’t enough money to retire, but it is enough to help you jumpstart the life you want to live.
So, what would you do with your extra 100,000 dollars?
