What Would You Do If You Were Homeless?
It could happen to almost anyone
There are homeless people of all ages
Although becoming homeless is not even a thought or consideration for most of the population of the United States of America, it could happen. People live a comfortable life with a home, meaningful employment, and a family that loves them. That is the case for most people.
It is not likely that the vast majority of people need to ever worry about being homeless. Everyone will have various problems throughout their lifetimes, but homelessness does not seem like it would ever happen to most people. It especially would not ever likely occur when people have learned and used good financial practices.
So who are those hundreds of homeless people you see as you drive down the streets of almost any city? Where did they come from and how did they get into the situation of being homeless? What caused them to have to live on the street or in small tents? What happened in their lives that caused such devastation to their way of living?
Most people do not start out being homeless. There are some small children and teenagers who are homeless with their families. Something happened to cause people to not have a home in which to live and feel safe. Most homeless people lost money or have no means of earning money. Life can be sad and lonely for them.
They could be your neighbors or family members. Many of the people living in homelessness are suffering from mental illness. Some are veterans who gave years of their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy. Some are young people who have not had a chance in life to find any measure of success. Some are old people who are no longer able to live a productive life.
Some people live in extreme poverty with terrible living conditions, but they are not homeless. They may work at low-paying jobs, but they are able to have a place to live and food to eat. They have had a hard time financially, but they have not become homeless.
Although homelessness is not likely to happen for most people, it does happen to too many people in the United States and actually throughout the world.
There are homeless shelters and agencies which help the homeless. Some people can find temporary help there and escape the cycle of homelessness. Others shun those organizations and might choose to be out on the street where they have more freedom. They all need to eat and find ways to get some money. They might resort to begging or even to stealing.
Although we may not have to ever worry about being homeless, there might be someone we know who becomes homeless. They may need a helping hand to escape that way of life. There may be something we can do to assist people who need help. Giving a handout is what they often want in the short term. People who can help should try to do so.
If you were homeless, it seems that you could reach out to family or friends to help out temporarily until you could get out of a desperate situation. There are usually people who would help if they are asked. Sometimes families are looking for their homeless family member who has lost contact with them.
People mostly realize that they are very fortunate that things are going well for them, that they have a home and the basic necessities of life. They may think, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” We should be grateful for our blessings.
No one would want to be homeless. It is surely not the type of life that people would choose. We may not be able to imagine ourselves being homeless, but maybe we should think of ways we can help people who are homeless.
