What Will It Take
A poem
How can we wipe this stain off the face of history? That so many humans live in subhuman conditions of wretchedness, desperation and poverty.
We know how to fix this. We have the means and the technology. What we lack is the will. Why?
Is it because the struggle against this wretchedness is not compatible with military expansion? With bowing down at the altar of national security?
Is the elimination of world poverty not compatible with the wanton wastefulness of a consumer society? With the terrible injustices of international trade policies?
Or with the great multinational corporations that place profits before people and trade in the souls of their citizens?
How is it possible, peacefully but effectively to transform the systems that continually increase the fortunes of the rich and at the same time increase untold wretchedness worldwide and bury almost the entire human race in it?
How can we find what we lack? Where does the ‘will’ come from? The power is in our hands, but what will it take for enough of us to say ENOUGH!
