What We Owe Our Future Selves
We can’t change the past, but we can change the future
Your past has shaped you into who you are
We are the accumulation of every decision, every experience, and every interaction we’ve had.
I’m grateful for where I’m at in my life, what I have, and who I have with me. I wouldn’t change anything about the path I’ve traveled if it altered the destination I’ve reached.
But I wish I’d told more people how I felt about them, good and bad. And I wish I’d chosen to dance instead of sitting out more often, chosen to be more adventurous.
I’m at a nice spot in my life, but I’d probably be more comfortable in my own skin if I’d flirted with the idea of pushing the limits of my comfort zone when I was younger.
But here’s the thing. I can’t change the past even if I wanted to. It’s gone. What happened, happened and we have to live with the consequences of our decisions and actions.
You can shape your future into who you want to become.
Do you ever wish you had been bolder or more decisive? Or “gone with your gut” more? It’s too late to help past-you, but future-you will thank you later if you change now.
Every decision and action you make today will influence who you become in the future.
Tell people what you think.
Be bold. Be decisive. Go with your gut.
Make mistakes. Maybe even fail at something. But learn. Get better. Be better.
We owe it to our future selves to not give them any causes for regret. To help them become the best versions of ourselves we can possibly be.
