Summary

The undefined website presents a writing challenge that invites participants to create a short story or poem incorporating the line "What was that doing in the first-aid kit anyway?"

Abstract

The undefined website outlines a creative writing challenge initiated by Martin Morrison, the founder and editor of "Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Short Stories" and "Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Poems." This challenge is inspired by an overheard question at a gym and prompts writers to craft a 750 to 2000-word short story, or alternatively, a poem, that includes the specified line. The prompt allows for flexibility in placing the line within the work, whether at the beginning, end, or woven into the narrative or verse. Participants are encouraged to share their responses with the community by tagging the founder and linking back to the challenge page, with the option to submit their work to the associated Medium publications for broader exposure.

Opinions

  • The challenge is seen as an opportunity for writers to explore their creativity and produce unique stories or poems based on a common prompt.
  • There is an emphasis on the diversity of responses expected from participants, highlighting the value of individual perspectives and interpretations.
  • The challenge is presented as a fun and engaging exercise, with no explicit reward other than the enjoyment of writing and the potential for community recognition.
  • The inclusion of a specific line in the participants' works is viewed as a catalyst for creative thinking and storytelling.
  • Martin Morrison expresses enthusiasm for discovering the varied outcomes of the challenge, suggesting that the process of setting such challenges is rewarding due to the wide range of submissions.

What Was in the First-aid Kit? — Writing Challenge

You decide!

This short story challenge is based on real life instead of a random script in my head.

While I was running on the treadmill yesterday, two staff members came out of the storage room behind me. As they did, one of them asked, ‘What was that doing in the first-aid kit anyway?’ and this one line tickled me. There seems to be a lot of scope for fun here.

What did they find in the first aid kit? Why was it there? How random can we be?

The Challenge?

Challenge One — Short Story

I want you to write a 750 to 2000-word short story, which must feature the line ‘What was that doing in the first-aid kit anyway?’ You can start with the line, end with it or embed it in the middle.

There’s no prize, but I enjoy seeing what people come up with. It’s as though everyone has different triggers, associations and ways of processing life. That’s what’s wonderful about setting these challenges; no two people will produce the same story.

If you are going to participate, please tag me (a bit of publicity can’t hurt) and include a link to this page. You can publish where you want, but your ideas will be more than welcome in Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Short Stories.

Challenge Two — Poem

If you are tickled by the possibilities but don’t want to write a short story, create a poem instead. Your poem must include the line ‘What was that doing in the first-aid kit anyway?’ You can start with the line, end with it or embed it within the poem.

If you are going to participate, please tag me and include a link to this page. You can publish where you want, but your ideas will be more than welcome in Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Poems.

All the best.
