What Trump Said About Veterans is Appalling
Bad words for heroes
Veterans have given much in defending freedom
It is generally accepted that whoever wrote Melania Trump’s speech for the Republican National Convention did a pretty good job. When Melania spoke at the convention, she said that her husband tells the truth [although he has been shown to have told at least 20,000 lies or fabrications during his term]. Melania also said that you always know what he is thinking, which could be true since he often says things which he might regret later. He denies saying things he is quoted as having said.
Trending on Facebook is a post about a visit that Donald Trump made a while ago. It was from an article in The Atlantic by Jeffrey Goldberg on September 3, 2020. You should check out the full article if you are interested. Trump has said that what Goldberg says is not true although the sources seem to be reliable people who are or were close to Trump.
Goldberg reported that when President Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain. He said that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true according to sources who said they were there.
Reportedly, Trump said: “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”
The article said that the president has repeatedly disparaged the intelligence of service members and asked that wounded veterans be kept out of military parades. He called American Marines in a World War I battle “suckers” and “losers.”
Trump said of the late Senator John McCain, “He’s not a war hero…I like people who weren’t captured.” McCain spent five years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam war. Trump said, according to sources, “We’re not going to support that loser’s funeral.” Trump is said to have been furious when he saw flags lowered to half staff, using expletives in his comments about McCain.
Former President George H. W. Bush was also called a “loser” by Trump for his actions in the military. President Bush was a Navy pilot in World War II.
Since he received a medical deferment from the draft, Trump did not serve in the military. The reason was supposedly because of the presence of bone spurs in his feet.
What Trump is alleged to have said about veterans is appalling. Trump denies saying those things although the author of the article in The Atlantic quoted from several sources, not just one. Trump is trying to get the votes of veterans, but this looks pretty bad.
This was reported by ABC News after Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania, “I would be willing to swear on anything that I never said that about our fallen heroes. There’s nobody that respects them more,” Trump said.
The president insisted the story is fabricated and suggested the anonymous sources were former officials who did not succeed in their roles in the administration.
“They made it up and probably it’s a couple of people that have been failures in the administration. That I got rid of, and I couldn’t get rid of them fast enough. Or it was just made up,” he said.
The Lincoln Project had a post in reply to the story in The Atlantic which said, “We’re suckers if we keep him in office.”
